(C. G.)Seen through the (very) small screen of the cell phones of hundreds of amateur reporters, what does the “Green Revolution”—which for one year contested the June 2009 elections inIran—look like? Via email and YouTube, the filmmaker(s), anonymous Iranian men andwomen living abroad, reconstitute the political events in which their friends were takingpart at the risk of their lives. “During those eight months, it’s as if I was living virtually inTehran” says an off-screen voice, whose fingers are seen saving the videos to a computer. While storing these images, the filmmaker(s) see(s) the situation as “a large puzzle withsome pieces missing”. And it is unsure whether this new, spontaneous and popular mediacan redress the imbalance between the demonstrators’ unavoidable clandestinity and theexhibitionism of the authoritarian authorities: the only ones likely to show their face arethe representatives of power… “but their faces are masks”. Comparing images from 1979with those from 2009, Fragments also explores the shift from one revolution to the other:“yesterday’s rioters are today’s guard dogs”.

(C. G.)Once a year in southern Utah, the hunt is on for last herds of wild buffalo. They numberedtens of millions until 19th-century expansionism and the will to harm native Americansdrove them to the brink of extinction. For five years, the filmmaker followed some of thehunters, not to document the event, but rather question today’s Frontier.Like California Company Town (Cinéma du Réel 2009), The Last Buffalo Hunt gleanstraces of History from the landscape. What has become of the open range that was foughtfor in westerns? On the already vintage 1998 videos, Terry, the guide who sells his servicesto occasional hunters, embodies both the pioneering spirit and its ultimate commodification. The campers’ joke about Obama hanging from a branch (referring to the lynching ofBlacks) is a sure and obscene sign that this world will die from its anachronism. But likethe buffalo repeatedly shot at by a couple that fail to finish it off, this world is in endlessdecline. Yet the filmmaker elegantly avoids facile satire of the rednecks to chisel an elegy.Rhythmed by a ghostly voice-over, the archive becomes living matter while in front of thecamera the present world, with its Indian-head snack-bar signs and its buffalo-head keyrings, lives under the diffuse threat of its already archived future.
