(C. G.)Peng, a Chinese immigrant to Europe, set up his camera over six years in his workplaces(often restaurant kitchens). Drawing on sixty hours of his filmed diary, Jahel Guerra Roaand Victoria Molina de Carranza show the hardships of a nomadic life due to unemployment(“I’ll go anywhere I’m needed”). The amateur filmmaker’s insistence on not puttingdown his camera even if he has nothing to say is moving. “Colleagues in France would say :in your first year away from China, your remarks are optimistic, in the second, you talk toyourself, and in the third, you can’t even find your words.” In a solitude that is increasinglyabsolute, the ritual of DV seems to be for him the only witness to his existence.

(C. G.)What is an individual, if not a blot at the window, in the photo of a building? A pointthat, after zooming in with a Google-Earth-type programme, would become a blurred-outface like so many others? Javier Loarte edits his documentary as a series of clicks. On theimages of his district in northern Madrid, Roberto Delgado—not seen on screen—talksabout himself. Close to where he lives, gentrification threatens, property prices are rising, the metro has arrived, Chinese workers work alongside Peruvians… “but don’t be fooled,it’s a very boring district”. Through details on his parents, neighbours and local tradespeople, the dilettante student with his beer-and-pizza diet paints a nonchalant portraitof a Spain that has not totally emerged from the 1950s.
