Promenade historique parmi quelques refuges bucoliques. City villages Paris is home to scores of peaceful enclaves, sheltered from the hustle and bustle, where quaint houses, flower gardens and cobbled streets lend a village feel. A historic stroll through these bucolic sanctuaries. par/by Christophe Jacquet photographies/photographs William Beaucardet Avant, il n’y avait rien. Before, there was nothing. “It was vacant for a long time, with maybe some sheds, stables and a potato warehouse.” In the midst of plaster sculptures in the workshop where his grandmother, sculptor Chana Orloff, once worked, Eric Justman reflects on the Villa Seurat’s past. Justman still lives in the house where he was born, on a paved alleyway in the south of Paris near the Parc Montsouris, which was built between 1924 and 1931. “Most of our neighbors were artists,” explains Justman. In addition to Chana Orloff, several artists, such as painter Pierre Bertrand and sculptor Robert Couturier, also owned homes here. Chaim Soutine rented here and Henry Miller wrote his book Tropic of Cancer at No. 18 in 1931. For the penniless American, Villa Seurat was the center of the world. Now, artistic effervescence has given way to the cozy charm 123 - paris Worldwide septembre/octobre september/october 2015
