she said in her introduction.
d’Amérique du Sud
En 2006, la socialiste Michelle
Bachelet est élue à la tête de
la République du Chili. Une
première, en Amérique du Sud,
pour une femme que d’accèder
à ce poste via le suffrage
universel direct. Elle présidera
le pays jusqu’en 2010, puis sera
à nouveau élue en 2014. Deux
autres pays sud-américains sont
aujourd’hui présidés par des
femmes : le Brésil avec Dilma
Rousseff et l’Argentine avec
Cristina Kirchner.
Marie Curie, première
femme prix nobel
Née à Varsovie, en Pologne,
Maria Sklodowska s’inscrit, à
24 ans, à la Sorbonne, à Paris,
pour la poursuite de ses études
de mathématiques et physique.
Elle y rencontre son futur mari,
le physicien Pierre Curie, et
s’intéresse à la radioactivité.
Son époux la rejoint dans ses
recherches, récompensées par
un prix Nobel de physique en
1903. Marie Curie devient la
première femme à recevoir une
telle distinction. Elle décroche,
huit ans plus tard, un prix de
chimie pour ses travaux sur le
polonium et le radium. Pendant
la Première Guerre mondiale,
elle installe, sur le front, des
unités de rayons X mobiles qui
localisent les éclats d’obus et
sauvent ainsi des milliers de
blessés. Marie Curie meurt en
1934, d’une maladie provoquée
her studies in physics and
husband, who joined her in her
research, she was rewarded the
1903 Nobel Prize in physics,
becoming the first woman to
receive this distinction. Eight
years later, Curie received
another award for her work on
polonium and radium. During
World War I, she installed mobile
X-ray units on the frontlines,
used to detect shrapnel in the
body, thus saving the lives of
thousands of injured soldiers.
Curie died in 1934 of a disease
caused by prolonged exposure
to radioactive elements.
Isabelle Autissier,
première navigatrice
à faire un tour du monde
en solitaire
Ingénieur spécialisée dans le
domaine de la pêche, Isabelle
Autissier construit son propre
bateau et participe, dans les
années 1980, à ses premières
courses. En 1991, elle boucle
son tour du monde en solitaire :
une première pour une femme.
Elle se consacre depuis aux
compétitions et aux expéditions
scientifiques, notamment en
Antarctique. Depuis 2009, elle
préside l’ONG WWF France.
An engineer specialized in
fisheries, Isabelle Autissier
designed her own boat and
began racing competitively in
the 1980s. In 1991, she was the
first woman to complete a solo
navigation of the world.
Autissier still competes, while
also participating in scientific
expeditions, notably in
Antarctica. Autissier has been
chairperson of the World Wildlife
Fund France since 2009.
