ment. Liberty of the press survived formally, but police supervision was exercised
after publication: all kinds of literary works could be published without restriction —
but they were allowed to come into the market only after the permission of the police.
This method of Controlling always overhung the writers, editors and publishers in their
business.
The progress of capitalism in technology and in society resulted above all in the quick
growth of periodical literature. These circumstances would hâve called for the organizing
of literary and press life, but the government strove to block its path.
In the end the Bach government left an important field of the national life out of considération,
as its could not encompass all the eomplicated aspects of Hungárián literary
and press life.
