Susanne, Penelope
all’avventura
the Adventure of Penelope
grammo e riempito dell’essenziale:
acqua, vivande, la zattera e il materiale
di sicurezza».
Nel guscio viola con il numero 745
di Penelope, per fortuna, c’è stato
anche il posto per qualche bel libro
(«Ma senza strapparne le pagine come
fanno i velisti in gara per tagliare
peso, ai miei libri ci tengo troppo»),
per l’Ipod dell’inseparabile
amica cantautrice Giua, e per il pannello
solare per ricaricarlo. «Ho portato
Anni passati a lavorare sulle barche
d’epoca e mettere da parte risparmi,
costruire con le proprie mani
la barca che sarebbe diventata compagna
d’avventura, allenarsi per di-
The boat is an empty shell in which
every gram is weighed, and filled
with only essentials: water, food, the
life raft, and safety material.” But in
the violet shell with the number 745
called Penelope, thank goodness,
there was room for a good book.
(“But without tearing out the pages
like racing sailors do to lighten their
weight – I like my books too much to
ruin them.”) Then there was her Ipod,
with singer-songwriter Giua, that
inseparable friend, and a solar panel
to recharge it. “I have brought all my
friends with me across the Equator;
all those who let me live this dream,
and who have supported me in these
years of sacrifice.” Years spent
working on antique boats and
putting aside her savings, building
with her own hands the boat that
Susanne Beyer is a Ligurian who has entered the Olympics of ocean sailing, the legendary Transat regatta -
a solitary month at sea, with only the stars for company
would accompany her on her
adventure, training to show that she
could face the hardest trials for any
sailor. This romantic enterprise went
well. But the problem arises now.
Now what? She has reached the
finish line, but her money has also
finished. “I could not find enough
financing to do the whole event. But
I thought, Pur Qua pà? Why not do it
anyway? And so I left.” And now she
can’t get home. She needs a sponsor
who she does not have, (she also was
supposed to be the testimonial for
the Festival of Feminine Excellence in
Genoa from November 16 to 21). But
no problem. Somehow it will all work
out. “The most important thing was
to go,” not get back. If worst comes
to worst, she will wait. That’s what
Penelope did.
