Tigullio, profumo di leggenda
the Air of Legends
Puny, Café Defilla, Panificio Spiga d’oro, Luchin: these are all legendary names and places. For the
last half century David Bixio – a doctor with a passion for gastronomy and member of the
Academy of Cuisine, Tigullio – has ferreted out the gourmet delights of the area
Silvia Neonato
Poi
Ava Gardner a Craxi e Silvio Berlusconi. Dai regnanti
Fino a
Benigni in miniatura, scherzoso e guitto:
Agnelli».
Se vogliamo restare nel mito, eccoci seduti all’antico
- risale al 1914 - Café Defilla di Chiavari,
zona neutrale nell’ultima guerra, quando il
proprietario svizzero fece disegnare la bandiera
del proprio Paese sulle tante vetrine. È un salotto
mondano e culturale e l’attuale proprietario,
For us, on the eastern Riviera, he has always been a
legend. Of course, the fact that he was born in
Portofino helps. His mother opened the
restaurant there in 1946, and though he worked as a
radio operator on winter cruise ships in the Caribbean,
he would return in the summer to help her out. Then,
one day, he stayed on in Portofino’s little piazza. Luigi
Miroli, known to all as Puny, is a Ligurian who does not
even accept credit cards. But the fascinating thing is
the number of people who have waited in lines to eat
at his restaurant – people like David Niven and Ava
Gardner, or presidents of Italy like Bettino Craxi and
Silvio Berlusconi. From the crowned heads of Europe
to Puny’s friend, Denzel Washington, writers and
publishers like Luigi Einaudi, industrial magnates like
the Agnellis (Puny was the best man at Fiat’s John
Elkann’s wedding), and stars with unpronounceable
names like Gwyneth Paltrow and Beyoncé, “I love them
all, but there is a special place in my heart for Liz
Taylor and Isaiah Berlin, who was counsel for the
American president and for everyone else.”
Puny, who never speaks badly of anyone, is a Roberto
Benigni in miniature – witty and fun. “I don’t have
time to explain to Michelin how we make pappardelle
Portofino”. Or, “I hate fish. I prefer a bit of sheep
cheese or pasta with tomato sauce, basil, and garlic.
But pesto without garlic I did only for Gianni Agnelli.”
Speaking of legends, another legendary place on
another part of the eastern Riviera, dates back to the
ancient past – 1914 –when Café Defilla was founded
in Chiavari. The café was on neutral territory, since the
Swiss owner had his country’s flag drawn on all the
windows. It is a classy joint, with culture, and the
