Dalle Americhe al Polo Sud
From the Americas to the South Pole
Genoa is hosting two
fascinating exhibitions. The
first, at the Ducal Palace, is on the
race to the South Pole, and offers
additional exhibits at the
Aquarium and at the Galata
Museum of the Sea (whose whole
third floor is dedicated to Italian
emigration to North and South
America, and to third-world
immigration to Italy in the last
forty years).
The exhibition at the Palazzo
Ducale has been open since March
18. On the centenary of the
conquest of the planet’s Antarctic
last frontier, it depicts the history
of the challenge between
Englishman, Robert Falcon Scott –
who died in the attempt, along
with all of the members of his
expedition – and Norwegian,
Roald Amundsen, who reached the
South Pole on December 14, 1911.
Films, multimedia installations,
reproductions, and historic
artifacts tell of the expeditions
crossing 2,900 kilometers of the
coldest regions of the Earth. The
Aquarium instead is featuring a
five-tank exposition (unique in
Europe) of the species that live in
these extreme conditions. Single
ticket for both the exhibition and
the Aquarium: full price 8 euros;
reduced price 6 euros; schools and
students under 26, 4 euros.
The Galata Museum of the Sea
returns to its studies of the great
migratory fluxes to and from Italy.
Argentina, nelle foreste del Brasile
e a New York. L’ultima sezione è
dedicata all’immigrazione verso
l’Italia che nell’ultimo decennio ha
portato la presenza straniera
regolare dal 3% al 7% della
popolazione. Testimonianze
fotografiche e video dei viaggi,
spesso drammatici, con cui oggi si
cerca di raggiungere il nostro
paese. Il museo è aperto dal
martedì al venerdì dalle 10 alle 18,
sabato, domenica e festivi dalle 10
alle 19,30. Ingresso: 11 euro intero,
6 euro ridotto 4-12 anni.
After the great success of the
exhibition, “La Merica!” [America!],
with 400,000 visitors in three
years, the museum now reserves
the whole of its third floor to
Italian emigration – 1,200 square
meters with over 40 multimedia
stations that tell of the peasant’s
world of the XIX century, the great
mass ready for emigration, and the
news
Due mostre a Genova raccontano due grandi storie: la conquista dell’Antartide a Palazzo Ducale e i viaggi dei contadini italiani
in cerca di fortuna nelle Americhe al Galata
Two exhibitions in Genoa tell two great stories: at the Ducal Palace, the race for the South Pole, and at the Galata Museum
of the Sea, the voyage of Italian peasants in search of fortune in the Americas
new colonies that would be
founded across the world, from
Manhattan’s famous little Italy to
Argentina’s Boca to Brazil. The last
section is dedicated to third world
immigration to Italy in the last
decade, bringing the number of
foreigners up from 3% to 7% of
the population. Photographs and
videos of travel, often dramatic,
bear witness to the hoards that
are trying to reach the shores of
our country. The museum is open
from Tuesday to Friday, from 10
AM to 6 PM, Saturday, Sunday,
and holidays from 10 AM to 7:30
PM. Entry: 11 euros full ticket, 6
euros reduced ticket (for children
4-12).
