Cambi rilancia i dolci
della Vedova
the Auctioneer, and the Widow’s Sweets
Marcello Cambi has just opened a restaurant-bar in
Genoa’s medieval old city. In the same 17th century
palace, with frescoes by Strozzi, he has renewed the old
candied sweets/pastry shop founded centuries ago by the
widow, Vedova Romanengo, whose clients included the
composer, Giuseppe Verdi, and Empress Sissi of Austria
Intorno si stringono i palazzi del
Cinquecento, ma piazza De Ferrari è
a due minuti da qui. Nel Palazzo
Branca Doria hanno inaugurato due
nuovi locali che non chiudono
neppure la domenica, uno al piano
sopra, l’altro sotto. «Si mangia e si
beve a tutte le ore. Porte aperte tutta
la settimana, non si chiude mai»,
spiega il nuovo proprietario, Marcello
Cambi, che vorrebbe rivoluzionare il
modo sobrio dei genovesi di fare
ristorazione. Sopra, al Cambi Cafè,
hanno rivisto la luce gli affreschi
seicenteschi di Bernardo Strozzi
ammirando i quali si gustano
pasticcini, the, caffè, brunch, aperitivi
e poi, volendo, si pranza e si cena con
un menù intenzionalmente casalingo
(c’è anche uno spazio esterno per la
buona stagione). Ma rimettere del
tutto in forma vico Falamonica è la
vista, al piano di sotto, della risorta
drogheria-confetteria Vedova
Romanengo con le sue marmellate,
caffè, the e delicatezze speziali che
fino a due anni fa si potevano gustare
in via Orefici (dove furono clienti
Verdi, Cavour e Sissi imperatrice
d’Austria). La pasticceria Vedova
Romanengo era tanto antica che la
Soprintedenza ne vincolò gli arredi. È
a quel punto che Cambi, proprietario
della Casa d’Aste e imprenditore
coraggioso, rileva parte dei mobili e
trova nuova casa alla confetteria, alla
quale apre una porta pure su via
Chiossone.
In questi locali di Palazzo Branca
Doria per anni c’era un negozio di
abbigliamento british prediletto dai
genovesi. Poi venne un antiquario.
Infine l’abbandono. Ma è grazie ai
tendaggi di tartan che decoravano la
boutique che si sono conservati gli
affreschi - conosciuti solo agli
studiosi d’arte - di Bernardo Strozzi,
che come affrescante a Genova si è
messo in mostra solo in altri due
palazzi (il Lomellino in via Garibaldi e
il Carpaneto in piazza Montano, per
chi vuole saperlo). Qui si esibisce con
un Trionfo sul soffitto e una sequenza
di scene di natura alle pareti. La chef
Giovanna è al comando in cucina,
mentre Cambi padre e figlio si vedono
nel centro storico a fare spesa.
Moscardini affogati, stoccafisso in
insalata, vitel tonnè, melanzane alla
parmigiana i piatti forti (Si cena con
circa 30 euro). Gli aperitivi meritano
una segnalazione a parte per via di
Vito, un barman mitico del Bar
Mangini e ancor prima, accanto a
Lino in piazza Alimonda, dove, nei
primi anni Settanta, si è consacrata la
moda degli aperitivi a Genova.
Palazzo Branca Doria is surrounded
by palaces from the 1500s, but the
bustling heart of modern Genoa is only
two minutes away. Inside, two new
eating places have been inaugurated,
and they don’t even close on Sundays
[like most of the other restaurants in
the city]. One above the other, here
“You eat and you drink at all hours. The
doors are always open. They never
close,” explains the new owner,
Marcello Cambi, who wishes to
revolutionize the sober mode of
Genoese restaurants. Above, at the
Cambi Cafè, Bernardo Strozzi’s 17th
century frescos can be admired while
you enjoy pastries, tea, an espresso,
brunch, an aperitif, and then, if you
wish, you can dine or lunch with an
international home-cooking menu,
even outdoors, in the right season.
But everything is back in its place in the
medieval alleyway, Vico Falamonica,
where the Vedova Romanengo
drogheria-confetteria shop offers up
marmalades, coffees, and candied
delicacies. Until two years ago its
delights could be enjoyed on the Street
of the Goldsmiths, Via Orefici, where
clients like the composer, Verdi; the
founder of Italy, Cavour; and Sissi the
Empress of Austria would drop into the
shop. The Vedova Romanengo pastry
shop was so antique that the
Superintendant of the Fine Arts would
not permit any changes to be made to
its furnishings. At that point, intrepid
cover
blue
entrepreneur, Cambi, owner of the
auction house of the same name,
bought a portion of the furniture and
found a new location for the
confetteria, (which now has a second
entrance on Via Chiossone).
The Palazzo Branca Doria once held a
“British” clothing shop, well loved by
Genoese. It was replaced by an antique
dealer, and then left empty. But thanks
to the tartan curtains that once
decorated the boutique, its frescoes
were preserved. Their existence was
known only to specialists, but they are
the work of Bernardo Strozzi, who
painted only two other palaces in
Genoa (the Lomellino in Via Garibaldi
and the Carpaneto in Piazza Montano).
On the ceiling is a Triumph, and a
sequence of nature scenes are frescoed
on the walls. The chef, Giovanna
commands in the kitchen, while the
Cambis, father and son, can be seen in
the old city, doing the shopping.
Moscardini in stew, stoccafisso [dried
cod] in salad, vitel tonnè, eggplant
parmisan are favorite dishes. (Dinner
costs circa 30 euros.) The aperitifs are
worthy of notice thanks to Vito, the
legendary barman of Bar Mangini and
before that, at Lino’s in Piazza
Alimonda, where in the early seventies,
the fashion for aperitifs in Genoa was
born.
