Per i ghiottoni
For Dessert Lovers
xxxxx
a piazza De Ferrari: nell’antica bottega, restata
comproprietario Michel Paquier, parigino, maestro
l’aperitivo.
Tornando a chi senza dolci vive peggio: non va
mancata la genovesissima torta Sacripantina dell’antico
caffè Mangini, né la torta croccante di
Mainero, i baci di Laigueglia all’Albatros, i finalesi
There are places that dessert lovers must not miss,
not for any reason. One is the gelateria bar Il
Baciollo in Sestri Levante, which since 1960 has
been producing every sort of ice cream flavor, ice
cream cake, semi-freddo, and popsicle using artisan
techniques. Another is the restaurant, Il Portico in
Chiavari, which makes homemade pandolce (Genoese
sweet-bread (and also stuffed mussels and stuffed
vegetables)). And then, on your way back to Genoa,
stop at the ice cream shop, Bar-Gelateria Cavassa in
Recco which offers 33 homemade flavors, but also
good toasted ham and cheese.
Next in Genoa, there are the inevitable two stops. The
chocolate makers, Cioccolateria Viganotti (now
owned by Alessandro Boccardo) whose aroma – since
1866 – reached almost to Piazza De Ferrari. The
antique boutique has not changed and still offers
chocolates with ginger, pepper and coffee, and mints,
jellies, candies, and chocolate spread.
Nearby is perhaps the best breakfast spot in the city
center, Douce patisserie café, a new place that
reflects the life of co-owner, Michel Paquier, master
pastry chef and chocolate-maker from Paris, the
author of almond or raisin croissants and pain au
chocolat that set the day off to the right start. His
salty stuffed croissants are wonderful, as are the
other dishes that he offers for lunch and for aperitifs.
And then there is the very Genoese cake called the
Sacripantina, to be enjoyed in the ancient Caffè
Mangini, the crunchy cake of Mainero, the
chocolate kisses of Laigueglia at the Albatros, or in
Finale at Ferro or in Alassio at the Antico caffé della
pasticceria Balzola. And these are just a few…but
never fear, we will be back on the theme of desserts
(in the meantime, check out the website, C&C
pasticcerie). S.Neo.
