Presidente Jensen, quale ruolo
attende le grandi città nell’attuale
scenario europeo?
Oggi l’Europa si prepara a
fronteggiare molte sfide: le nostre
economie sono in crisi, la
disoccupazione in aumento e cresce il
rischio dell’esclusione sociale,
soprattutto tra i giovani. Le grandi
città sono i luoghi dove queste sfide
sono più sentite e al tempo stesso la
chiave della soluzione. L’Unione
Europea ha trovato un accordo per
una strategia di crescita entro il
2020. Ma una crescita reale si potrà
ottenere solo se avremo città
intelligenti, sostenibili e inclusive.
In un momento di crisi economica
globale, qual è il valore aggiunto
per una grande città che partecipa
a un network come Eurocities?
È essenziale mantenere un profilo
ambizioso, per attirare commercio,
talenti e turismo. Le risorse dell’UE
sono sempre più importanti per
moltiplicare gli investimenti e
permettere nuove soluzioni di
sviluppo. Eurocities garantisce che
questi fondi arrivino effettivamente
alle città: i luoghi dove abita la
maggioranza delle persone e con le
maggiori prospettive di crescita
economica.
Nel corso del suo mandato, quali
sono stati i principali risultati delle
attività di lobbying verso le
istituzioni UE?
Segnalo, in particolare, due vittorie
recenti. Prima fra tutte, il
riconoscimento da parte della
Commissione Europea
dell’importanza strategica della
mobilità urbana, dopo una campagna
di tre anni sostenuta da Eurocities. La
seconda è l’impegno del Commissario

President Jensen, what role do you
see for the big cities in the present
European situation?
Today Europe is preparing to face
many challenges. Our economies are
in crisis, and unemployment is
increasing, alongside the risk of
social exclusion, especially among
youths. The big cities are places
where these challenges are most felt,
and are, at the same time, the key to
the solution. The European Union has
found an agreement for a strategy
for growth by 2020. But real growth
can only be had with cities that are
intelligent, sustainable, and inclusive.
In this moment of global economic
crisis, what are the values that a
big city adds, when it participates
in a network like Eurocities?
It is essential to maintain an
ambitious profile to attract
commerce, talent, and tourism. The
resources of the European Union are
ever more important in order to
multiply investments and permit new
development solutions. Eurocities
guarantees that these funds do
effectively reach the cities, which are
the places where the great majority
of the population resides and which
offer the greatest prospective for
economic growth.
During the course of your
mandate, what have been the main
results of Eurocities’ influence on
European Union policies on behalf
of cities?
I would like to point out two recent
victories. The most important is the
recognition on the part of the
European Commission of the
strategic importance of urban
mobility. This was achieved only after
a three year campaign by Eurocities.

Sull’urbanistica si concentra il
maggior numero di risorse UE, dopo
l’agricoltura. Una conferma di ciò che
stiamo dicendo ormai da anni.
Cosa si aspetta dal convegno di
Genova, dedicato al “Planning for
people” (programmazione per la
gente)?
Sarà affascinante sentire le diverse
prospettive proposte da Renzo Piano
e dai sindaci di Varsavia, Stoccolma,
Francoforte, Anversa e Rotterdam,
protagoniste del nostro panel
principale. Abbiamo scelto di
dedicare questo focus alla
rigenerazione urbana, un concetto
molto attuale in questo momento. Se
vogliamo che le nostre città tornino a
competere, i loro leader devono
offrire spazio alle potenzialità dei
propri concittadini.

heading. This confirms what we have
been saying for years.
What are your expectations for the
convention in Genoa on the
theme, “Planning for People”?
It will be fascinating to hear Renzo
Piano and the Mayors of Warsaw,
Stockholm, Frankfurt, Antwerp and
Rotterdam, the lead speakers on our
main panel. We have made the
deliberate decision to focus on urban
renewal, which is a timely concept at
this moment. If we want our cities to
compete, their leaders must be able
to unleash the potential of their
people.
