Cos’è Eurocities
What is Eurocities?
Nato nel 1986 col nome di
Telecities, Eurocities è il network
che collega i governi locali di
oltre 130 città, in
rappresentanza di 26 paesi
europei, per affrontare insieme
le sfide strategiche dell’Unione
Europea a livello locale. La rete
svolge un’intensa attività di
lobbying, allo scopo di
sensibilizzare le istituzioni
europee sul tema delle politiche
urbane e sul ruolo delle città cui
destinare i principali
finanziamenti UE, favorire la
cooperazione sui temi dello
sviluppo urbano attraverso lo
scambio di informazioni ed
esperienze, sostenere le città del
centro-est Europa verso un
sistema democratico di governo
ed un’economia di mercato. Le
principali materie affrontate
sono Cooperazione, Cultura,
Ambiente, Economia, Società,
Ricerca, Mobilità e Affari Sociali.
Founded in 1986 under the
name, Telecities, Eurocities is a
network that connects the local
governments of over 130 major
cities in 26 European countries,
to enable them to face the
strategic challenges of the
European Union at local level.
The network carries out an
intense lobbying activity to
sensitize European institutions
on urban policy themes and the
role of cities with respect to
major EU financing. It also
encourages cooperation in
urban development issues
through the exchange of
information and experiences,
and supports the cities of the
eastern Europe in their
development of a democratic
system of government and a
market economy. Its main fields
of interest are Cooperation,
Culture, Environment, Economy,
Society, Research, Mobility, and
Social Affairs.

Genova è attesa alla prova della maturità, dopo
aver contribuito al rafforzamento dell’EuroRegione
(insieme a Torino, Nizza e Marsiglia) e alimentato
il dibattito sugli strumenti di finanziamento
europeo dedicati alle aree urbane. Ne è
convinto l’assessore comunale alle Politiche formative
Paolo Veardo, che mercoledì 2 novembre
saluterà l’inizio dei lavori.
«Eurocities - spiega Veardo
– ha permesso di
costruire una fitta rete
di relazioni tra le principali
città europee:
una prova di democrazia
partecipativa “dal
basso” che vede Genova
in prima linea».
La parola chiave è la
Rete, intesa non solo
come scambio e collaborazione
tra istituzioni,
ma come realtà dinamica
che ha saputo
interpretare i mutamenti
di questi anni, riportando
le città al centro
dello sviluppo
europeo. Lo ha ricordato

In realtà ciò che le fa diventare motori
di crescita economica è l’interazione

creatività e commercio».
I quattro giorni del convegno ruoteranno attorno
al tema della pianificazione territoriale e dell’impatto
che essa riveste nello sviluppo urbano.
Non è un caso che sarà proprio l’archistar genovese
Renzo Piano ad aprire il focus principale
dell’evento, dal titolo “Planning for People”, sulla
scia della Biennale dell’Urbanistica che si è tenuta
ai Magazzini del Cotone lo scorso settembre.
Un filo rosso unisce Genova a Varsavia,
Stoccolma, Francoforte, Anversa e Rotterdam, le
città-laboratorio del panel dedicato ai nuovi modelli
urbanistici sostenibili. La “rigenerazione urbana”,
come l’ha definita Jensen, non può che
passare da una nuova attenzione nei confronti
del cambiamento climatico. Un discorso avviato
nel febbraio 2009 col “Patto dei Sindaci” per incentivare
il risparmio energetico e promuovere

As Genoa awaits its maturity exam, having
contributed to the reinforcement of the
EuroRegion (along with Turin, Nice and Marseilles),
it feeds the debate on instruments of European
finance dedicated to urban areas. The City Assessor
for Training Policies, Paolo Veardo, is absolutely
convinced that on
Wednesday, November 2

a serious work.
“Eurocities”, Veardo
explains, “has allowed
us to build up a dense
network of relationships
among the main
European cities. It is a
proof of the
participation in
democracy ‘of the base’,
which will see Genoa on
the front lines.”

which has been able to
interpret the changes in
these years, bringing the
cities into the center of
European development. President Jensen also
brought up the topic, “Too often we think of the
city as a simple agglomeration of buildings and
infrastructure. But in reality what makes them
become engines of economic growth is the
interaction generated by density: urban
concentrations are magnets for talent, ambition,
creativity, and commerce.”
The four days of the convention will revolve
around the theme of territorial planning and the
impact that this has on urban development. Not by
chance, native son and star architect, Renzo Piano
will open the main focus of the event entitled,
“Planning for People”, following in the footsteps of
the Urban Design Biennale which was held at
Genoa’s Magazzini del Cotone last September.
A continuous thread unites Genoa to Warsaw,
Stockholm, Frankfurt, Antwerp, and Rotterdam,
the laboratory-cities of the panel dedicated to new
sustainable urban models. Urban renewal, as
Jensen defines it, cannot but give new attention to
the changing climate. This topic was brought to
