to another. The voyage as it brings
identity to previously unknown
places. And the interior voyage
which is then the conclusion of the
route that Van Gogh took,
discovering in depth the territories
inside of himself.”
And why Gauguin? “Because of his
work entitled, Where We Come
from, Who We Are, and Where We
Are Going, which has been loaned
to us, in extraordinary
circumstances, only the second
time in Europe, by the Museum of
Fine Arts in Boston, U.S.A . In
addition to its being Gauguin’s
most extraordinary work, this
painting conveys – more than any
other – the true sense of the word,
‘voyage’. It is therefore very exciting
to be able to view it here in Europe.
It will be shown alone in a vast
shadowy salon, focusing all

Al centro della mostra è comunque
Van Gogh, con tanti capolavori, tra
i quali anche la più celebre versione
del Seminatore dipinta ad Arles
nel 1888. Sono una quarantina le
opere dell’artista olandese esposte,
quasi tutte interamente prestate
dal Van Gogh Museum di Amsterdam
e dal Kröller-Müller Museum
di Otterlo. «Ma vi sono anche –
spiega Goldin - una serie di lettere
originali dell’artista riferite alle
opere esposte e per la prima volta
visibili in Italia». Ci saranno anche
una quindicina di libri provenienti
dal suo studio, che, secondo Goldin,
«lo hanno accompagnato in
questo suo viaggio dal disegno fino
all’esplosione del colore». E poi,
attention onto it.”
At the center of the exhibition is
Van Gogh, with many of his
masterpieces, among which is the
most celebrated version of The
Sower, painted in Arles in 1888.
Around forty of his works will be
shown, almost all loaned to Genoa
by the Van Gogh Museum of
Amsterdam and the Kröller-Müller
Museum of Otterlo. “But there are
also other items of interest,”
explains Goldin. “There is a series of
original letters from the artist that
refer to the works shown, exhibited
in Italy for the first time.” There are
also around fifteen books from his
studio, which, according to Goldin,
“have accompanied him on his
voyage from drawing to the
explosion of color.” Also from Van
Gogh’s library are a dozen
illustrations “which the artist cut
out from magazines, and which he
used in the early years to draw, but
also to paint”.
Around Van Gogh and Gauguin,
sempre dalla biblioteca di Van
Gogh, arrivano una decina di illustrazioni
«che l’artista ritagliava da
riviste e che gli servivano soprattutto
nei primi anni per disegnare,
ma poi anche per dipingere».
Attorno a Van Gogh e Gaughin,
Goldin ha inserito altri autori che
testimoniano il concetto di viaggio:
‘’Sia in America, dalla seconda
metà dell’Ottocento e poi tutto il
Novecento, fino all’astrazione di
Mark Rothko, sia in Europa partendo
da Caspar David Friedrich e da
William Turner, quindi i due grandi
pittori romantici».
E quale miglior luogo per ospitare
questa mostra se non Genova, da
dove sono partiti viaggi importanti
a partire dalla conquista di un
nuovo continente? «Il viaggio verso
le Americhe – racconta Goldin –
è presente dalla prima sala della
mostra. Poi vi sono altre sale in cui
i pittori americani la fanno da padroni.
