Nitrogen and phosphorus in sediment are divided into two pools: one is an active layer which takes<br />

part in the remineralization processes and there is also inactive part which is a result of burial<br />

removing nutrients from the system permanently. Values of burial coefficients were calibrated in<br />

the model after calibration of all other nutrient fluxes in sediment. <strong>The</strong> same burial ratio is used for<br />

nitrogen and phosphorus but there is a difference between the Grosses Haff and the Kleines Haff.<br />

<strong>The</strong> denitrification coefficient was calibrated within the model. Only denitrification in sediment is<br />

considered in the model and 50% of the nitrogen flux form mineralization in sediment is<br />

denitrified. Due to lack of the data on denitrification flux in the in the Lagoon water column and<br />

sediments this is a very coarse assumption but a general structure of the model did not allow for<br />

more specific calibration of this process.<br />
