A monitoring strategy on benthic invertebrates which satisfies the demands of the Directive should
be carried out in early summer. All biotiopes along an increasing depht should be recorded by
samples. For the deeper sampling sites a grab sampler or core sampler should be used. For the
reeds and the shore structures time based hand net samples are recommended. The major habitats
should be sampled prorportionally according to their presence within the sampling site.
Additionally, chemical and physical parameters should be recorded. Sampling sites should be
chosen in dependency on shore conditions, sites with dense reeds should be favoured. The deeper
sites should fit the existing phsyicochemical monitoring program.
