Württemberg, More is better - but it must be good: the logic that underpins development in Baden-Württemberg By Senator h.c. Wolfgang Wolf, CEO, LVI Industry Association of Baden-Württemberg Inc. Baden-Württemberg: The homeland of success. Or: if you sow diligence, you will reap success. If three small German federal states, united almost exclusively by privation and poverty, with no natural resources to call their own, have managed within one hundred and fifty years to become an industrial powerhouse, with incomparable levels of innovation, and also the home of liberal developments, the initiator of forward-looking social policies and passionate promoter of education and science, it can only be thanks to the people who live in these states. aber auch große Teile Badens blieben abseits: keine Kohle und kaum Erz und noch keine Eisenbahn, mit der Massengüter hätten herangeschafft werden können. Eine Dynamik, die nicht bei Produkten If you want to discover more, the book „Wurzeln des Wohlstandes“ (the roots of prosperity), published by the Baden-Württemberg Chamber of Commerce, is well worth reading to see the situation in snapshots at different times: „... coal and iron - these were the materials which, starting from Great Britain, formed the first wave of industrialisation which changed the entire continent. However, Württemberg and large areas of Baden remained unaffected. They had no coal, hardly any iron and, as yet, no railway routes that would have been able to bring in these bulky raw materials. Nevertheless, as so often happens, adversity transformed itself into good fortune because a virtue was made of necessity. Virtue: when there was no need to expend physical strength in mining coal and producing iron, the only thing left to do was to use the brain. .. „. Yes, the land that had no natural resources really was destitute. This was exacerbated by the land inheritance laws. As a result, after three generations, a Swabian „field“ was only ten meters long and about as wide as a hand towel. Obviously, you couldn‘t harvest anything from that. However, by using its „natural“ resources of „inventiveness and tinkering“ this region has forged its path to global prominence. The idea of launching something new, something better into the marketplace (linked with the entrepreneurial courage to do so) created tremendous economic dynamism. This dynamism was not merely limited to products. It was accompanied by new ideas in trade, in transport and movement of goods, in tourism, and for financial transactions, for the new insurance sector. However, ideas alone were not enough: the transformation from Cinderella to Queen of Commerce, from the ugly duckling into a swan, needed a few other ingredients - which were also present in large quantities. It was diligence, virtue, farsightedness and talent which made this region into an „economic power“. Man war beim „Daimler“, man war the value of fulfilling your duty - that was an important source of inspiration. However, this cannot be seen as the only driving force. Perhaps it is rather that our inhabitants‘ understanding of life, and above all, their own living conditions that inspire them to produce things that are not simply to be used, but which also retain their value and, in their own turn, create other valuable things. Nowadays this is known as capital goods - and for good reason: Baden-Württemberg is so well appreciated that the region could be said to have a patent on this. The determination to make something „worthwhile“ out of nothing or very little, is a characteristic of this region. Baden-Württemberg: The home of commercial and social expertise Very early on, entrepreneurs realised that they had to get involved with science if they didn‘t want to get left behind. They also identified the absolute necessity of meeting their social responsibilities. Denn das Fahrrad und das Auto, die Zündkerze und die Spätzlepresse, der Zeppelin und die Funk- uhr, der Dübel und die elektrische Handbohrmaschine, der Hebelordner und das Systemgeschirr, Badische Gesellschaft für Spinnerei und Weberei (Baden spinners and weavers association) in Ettlingen, which was introduced when the company was founded in 1836, workers housing, company apartments, and workers settlements around the turn of the century, support for employees by the establishment of creches with special kitchens preparing healthy and nutritious food for the children (1905), inexpensive company canteens, and a reduction in working time, introduced by Robert Bosch - to reduce the working day from ten to nine hours. Promotion of young talents - there is more to this region than work and wages. To further this aim, those responsible for economic and social activities joined forces to create a unique proposal for the future. Then as now, the mainspring of Baden- Württemberg‘s success was based on three factors: innovation, the interplay between research and science, and a population that is motivated to do well. At „Daimler“ and „Bosch“ you felt yourself part of a family. Spätestens jetzt wird die Verwandlung, wird die Metamorphose vom armen Land zum bedeutenden Industriestandort verständlich. a company is a factor which is not always valued as highly as it should be. The wages of virtue: The world would be a very different place without innovation from Baden-Württemberg. The bicycle, the car, the spark plug and the Spätzle (German noodles) press, the zeppelin and radio clock, the wall plug and the electrical hand drill, the lever arch file and systemised table ware, the phosphorescent match and Uhu glue, the bra, the perm and also the first windmill with aerodynamically optimised sails - all these come from Baden-Württemberg. Every year around 16,000 patent applications are made in Baden-Württemberg. The region has registered more patents per capita than any other federal state in Germany. If this region were a company, it would be renowned as an „idea smith“ - a real „think tank“. By now it should be obvious how the transformation from a poverty-stricken land into a significant industrial heartland took place.
