Ein Interview mit Dr. Rolf-Jürgen Ahlers, Vorsitzender Forum LR BW
WerteLand Baden-Württemberg:
Dr. Ahlers, can you describe the values
and aims of the Forum Aerospace
Baden-Württemberg in one sentence?
Dr. Rolf-Jürgen Ahlers: To have ideas and convert
them into actions – to be innovative.
WL-BW: In other words, a transfer of activities
to the areas of research, development and implementation?
Dr. R-J.A.: The important thing for me in this respect
is to closely intermesh areas of expertise because
this makes good economic sense. Science moves
forward across all sectors of industry - the automobile
and electronics industry, and the aerospace sector,
mutually provide valuable stimuli for each other.
„How can I convert ideas into application?“, this is
both the question and the challenge.
WerteLand Baden-Württemberg: Herr Dr. Ahlers,
Werte und Ziele des Forums Luft- und
Raumfahrt in einem Satz?
Dr. Rolf-Jürgen Ahlers: Ideen haben und diese in
Anwendungen überführen – innovativ sein.
WL-BW: Transferleistungen also auf den Gebieten
Forschung, Entwicklung und Umsetzung?
Dr. R-J.A.: Wichtig ist mir dabei die enge Verzahnung
der Kompetenzen, weil sie wirtschaftlich vernünftig
ist. Wissenschaft entwickelt sich branchenübergreifend
- die Automobil- und Elektroindustrie
auf der einen Seite und Luft- und Raumfahrt auf
der anderen Seite geben sich wechselseitig wertvolle
Impulse. „Wie kann ich Ideen in Anwendungen
überführen?“, das sind Frage und Aufforderung
in einem.
WL-BW: Ist Baden-Württemberg dafür ein
guter Nährboden?
Dr. R-J.A.: Ein besonders guter sogar. Innovationen,
Erfindungen und die reibungslose, rasche
Überführung in die erfolgreiche Praxis kennen hier
im Land besonders viele Beispiele. Denken Sie auf
dem Gebiet der Luft- und Raumfahrt an Zeppelin,
Eugen Sänger oder Hanns Klemm. Baden-Württemberg
ist reich an innovativen Unternehmen
und einer gut ausgebauten wissenschaftlichen In-
WL-BW: Is Baden-Württemberg fertile ground
for this?
Dr. R-J.A.: Actually, it is outstanding. In this region
you can find many examples of how innovation
and invention have been quickly and smoothly
turned into successful products. In the aerospace
industry, just think about Zeppelin, Eugen Sänger
or Hanns Klemm. Baden-Württemberg has
a wealth of innovative companies and an excellent
scientific infrastructure. In addition to the
internationally recognised Faculty of Aerospace
Engineering and Geodesy at the University of
Stuttgart, the universities of Freiburg, Karlsruhe,
Ulm or Tübingen also provide an outstanding
base. This is complemented by applied research
and development from the transfer centres of the
Steinbeis foundation, a number of Fraunhofer
frastruktur. Neben der international anerkannten
Fakultät für Luft- und Raumfahrttechnik und Geodäsie
der Universität Stuttgart, bieten die Universitäten
Freiburg, Karlsruhe, Ulm oder Tübingen eine
hervorragende Basis. Ergänzt werden diese durch
angewandte Forschung und Entwicklung durch
die Transferzentren der Steinbeis-Stiftung, diverse
Fraunhofer-Institute und die beiden Standorten,
des DLR mit ihren Kompetenzen in der Luftfahrt,
dem Weltraum, dem Verkehr und der Energie.
WL-BW: So werden auch auf dem Arbeitsmarkt
Impulse gesetzt?
Dr. R-J.A.: Unbedingt - und zwar über viele wichtige
Branchen hinweg. Technologie- und Innovationsfelder
sind stark beeinflusst durch die Luft- und

aerospace, transport and energy.
WL-BW: Does this also stimulate the job market?
Dr. R-J.A.: Absolutely - and in many important sectors.
The aerospace industry has a major effect on
the fields of technology and innovation. Supplier
industries use the expertise and procedures in their
core areas of activity to continuously improve their
knowledge base and, as a result, create technological
applications in the aerospace sector. You can see
many instances of this transfer of knowledge from
the automobile industry, the textile industry, medical
technology, information and communications technology
and the machine tool industry. Information
from these different sectors has all been used in the
development and production of new airplanes, and
Raumfahrtindustrie. Zulieferindustrien nutzen Erkenntnisse
und Verfahren auf ihren Kerngebieten
für eine weitergehende Wissens-Verwertung und als
Folge entstehen dann Technologie-Anwendungen
in der Luft- und Raumfahrt. Für diese Transfers
gibt es viele Beispiele aus der Automobilindustrie,
der Textilindustrie, der Medizintechnik, der Informations-
und Kommunikationstechnik und dem
Werkzeugmaschinenbau.
Die Erkenntnisse aus den unterschiedlichen Branchen
flossen in die Entwicklung und die Fertigung
neuer Flugzeuge ein, bzw. wirkten sie auf diese
wieder zurück. Hier vernetzen sich eher traditionelle
Industriezweige mit den Anforderungen und

WL-BW: Do you work closely with the LVI?
Dr. R-J.A.: We are a member of the umbrella industrial
association of Baden-Württemberg and are active
in its decision-making and working committees.
This ensures that experiences, and the entire LVI network,
can be used.

Dr. R-J.A.: Wir sind Mitglied im Spitzenverband
der baden-württembergischen Industrie und wir-

Dr. R-J.A.: The Forum Aerospace is supported and
financed by its members. These include companies,
universities, research institutes and establishments
that are involved with aerospace in Baden-Württemberg.
WL-BW: And what is the function of the LR BW?
Dr. R-J.A.: We see ourselves as acting like a „bridge“.
We are a point of contact for state politicians. We
bundle the interests of the various aspects of our
branch of the economy. We facilitate, promote and
support collaborative ventures and networks to create
the greatest benefits for our individual members.
This is, for example, a significant benefit for small and
medium-sized companies (SMEs) which are involved
in long-term projects. Furthermore: As fewer pro-

WL-BW: Wer ist Träger des Forums Luft- und
Raumfahrt Baden-Württemberg?
Dr. R-J.A.: Das Forum LR BW wird durch seine
Mitglieder getragen und finanziert. Das sind Unternehmen,
Hochschulen, Forschungsinstitute und
Einrichtungen, die mit der Luft- und Raumfahrt in
Baden-Württemberg befasst sind.
WL-BW: Und worin besteht die Arbeit
des LR BW?

European countries. Our activities are designed to
support the many small and medium-sized suppliers
enterprises and to help them cope with the challenges
of the future.
We also take care of organisational tasks and act as
a conduit for technological topics, joint research and
development projects, ensuring the involvement of
new talents and communicating results in the form
of workshops and conferences. We actively work
towards extending the network in the direction of
more innovative topics and joint projects. And all that
is always carried out in close cooperation with our
members and the working groups.
WL-BW: Surely, achieving technological advances
is high up on the LR BW‘s agenda?
