“Universities do not age. They thrive on generations
who take continual delight in solving problems and mastering
new challenges.” With these words the 2007 anniversary
publication introduces its review celebrating 175
years of Stuttgart University of Applied Sciences. And
indeed, the Winter School for Building Craftsmen, later
the Winter School of Construction, renamed in 1869
as the Royal Württemberg School of Construction and
in 1971 as Stuttgart Polytechnic before being finally re-
named in 1995 as Stuttgart University of Applied Sci-

ences has retained one crucial element over its now 178
years of teaching and work: symbiosis – the interaction
and association of knowledge and implementation, of
clear theory and well-founded practical work – has remained
an enduring value that is and always will be of
great importance.
In 1832 the force behind the founding of the school
was the best of Baden-Württemberg virtues: hard work,
practical experience and the achievement of goals on the
one hand, theoretical knowledge on the other. We wanted
to know what has become of these values, whether
these virtues have endured – and we discussed the matter
with Prof. Dr. Gerhard Wanner of the Faculty of
Geomatics, Computer Science and Mathematics, Head

Professor Wanner, “tradition and innovation” – those are
the key characteristics claimed by the HFT Stuttgart, the
University of Applied Science. What are the main points
behind this, the special features and the philosophy?
Professor Gerhard Wanner: The “Winter School”, as
it was called upon its foundation, is one of the oldest
universities in the country. It was originally conceived
to provide further training for craftsmen. Its objective
was typical, given the nature of the state. If you want to
know how a highly innovative, highly industrialised location
can develop from an agricultural land, you will find
that, in addition to the division of estates which deci-

Herr Professor Wanner, „Tradition und Innovation“,
so kennzeichnet sich die HFT Stuttgart,
die Hochschule für Technik. Wo liegen
die Schwerpunkte, die Besonderheiten und die
Philosophie?
Professor Gerhard Wanner: Die „Winterbauschule“
– so ihr Gründungsname – ist eine der ältesten
Hochschulen des Landes. Sie diente ursprünglich der
Weiterbildung des Handwerks. Ihr Ziel war typisch
für den Charakter des Landes. Wer danach fragt, wie
sich aus einem Agrarland ein hochinnovativer, hochindustrialisierter
Standort entwickeln kann, der findet

than effort and striving, there is one really special ingredient:
namely, the will to do practical work, but also the
will to understand and evaluate the whys and wherefores
of this practical experience from a theoretical perspective.
In other words, to take practical matters beyond
their boundaries and into the realms of innovation, wherein
the aim is to forge a bridge between a practical existence
and the necessary visions by means of theoretical
research, discovery and knowledge.
To a certain extent it was “block tuition”: in months
when the weather permitted construction work the
school was closed. In the winter months, the craftsmen
came to underpin their practical work with theory. Even
today, the closeness of theoretical instruction and practical
application is especially important: every student
at this university spends a semester gaining practical
experience in an office in the private or public sector.
Added to that, previous practical experience is demand-
ed of applicants so that they can get a feel for what
their future profession is really about and avoid a shock
when they come to do the practical element later. Now-
adays intercultural experiences during the course also
play a major role. Studying abroad at one of more than
70 partner universities worldwide is an integral part of
some courses.
HFT Stuttgart is the only university in Germany to offer
courses such as Bachelor of Building Physics and Information
Logistics. Why is that?

kleine Teile dezimierte, und neben dem Pietismus,
der etwas anderes als strebendes Bemühen nicht zuließ,
eine ganz besondere Zutat: Den Willen nämlich,
praktisch arbeiten zu können, die Praxis aber
auch theoretisch in ihrem Warum und ihren Folgen
zu verstehen und zu bewerten. Sie also über ihre
Grenzen hinweg auszudehnen, hinein in innovative
Weiten, in denen als Ziel praktisches Dasein und nötige
Visionen durch die Brücke theoretischen Forschens,
Entdeckens und Wissens verbunden werden.
Es war gewissermaßen ein „Blockunterricht“: In
den Monaten, die witterungsbedingt Arbeiten am
Bau zuließen, war sie geschlossen. In den Wintermonaten
kamen die Handwerker, um praktische
Arbeit theoretisch zu untermauern. Auch heute ist
die Nähe von theoretischer Lehre und praktischer
Anwendung von besonderer Bedeutung. Jede Stu-

boards that exist for each subject area, we have
very close links with industry and commerce. The company
advisory boards saw the need for the surveyors
and computer scientists to pool their knowledge. The
result: the new interface course, Information Logistics.
It is concerned with just-in-time provision of informa-
tion. Here, two dynamically developing economic sectors
come together, with Information and Communication
Technology on the one hand and Logistics on the
other. The Bachelor of Building Physics course had a
similar genesis.
