Notes
A Laboratory distilled leaf and bark oils.
B Commercial cassia bark oil analysed by GLC on SCOT column. Values are means of three analyses.
Montes (1963) applied GLC for the analysis of cassia oil constituents and found a
number of compounds, including eugenol and salicylaldehyde. Ter Heide (1972) analysed
cassia oil (C. cassia) by GLC and identified 35 compounds in the oil. This analysis was conducted
after the cinnamic aldehyde had been removed with sodium bisulphite (NaHSO 3)
solution. The cinnamic aldehyde free fraction was then separated into noncarbonyls,
phenolic and acid fractions. Each fraction was separately analysed for the constituents by
GLC. Those compounds identified (Senanayake, 1977) are given in Table 3.4.
Lawrence and Hogg (1974) reported the composition of the bark oil of two uncommon
Cinnamomum species growing in the Philippines. The bark oil from C. mercadoi
contained 17 constituents, and bark oil from C. mindanaense 29 constituents. The major
compounds of C. mercadoi were safrole (30.3%), 1,8-cineol (29.4%) and eugenol
