It is used as a spice by local people and is known by names such as Pati-Hunda, Nagadalchini,
Seerang-esing, Sami-Jong and Tejpat-manbi (Baruah et al., 1997). The bark is sold
in local markets. The bark (as well as its infusion) is used as medicine for the treatment
of coughs, colds, toothaches, liver complaints, gall stones and as a mouth freshner
(Rao, 1981). The leaves can also be used for the preparation of a kind of rice-beer known
as Apong (Hajra and Baishya, 1981).
Chowdhury et al. (1998) reported the composition of bark and flower oils from two
