Other Useful Species of <strong>Cinnamomum</strong> 331<br />

It is used as a spice by local people and is known by names such as Pati-Hunda, Nagadalchini,<br />

Seerang-esing, Sami-Jong and Tejpat-manbi (Baruah et al., 1997). <strong>The</strong> bark is sold<br />

in local markets. <strong>The</strong> bark (as well as its infusion) is used as medicine for the treatment<br />

of coughs, colds, toothaches, liver complaints, gall stones and as a mouth freshner<br />

(Rao, 1981). <strong>The</strong> leaves can also be used for the preparation of a kind of rice-beer known<br />

as Apong (Hajra and Baishya, 1981).<br />

Chowdhury et al. (1998) reported the composition of bark and flower oils from two<br />

locations of Assam (India) using GC and GC-MS. <strong>The</strong> bark from both areas yielded
