Indonesia and China, the major producers of the cassia type of cinnamon<br />

increased, their production from the beginning of 1980s and together captured<br />

almost 70% of the world market. Consequently, export from traditional cinnamon<br />

producers like Sri Lanka, Madagascar and Seychelles declined drastically from 34.3,<br />

1.9 and 6.8 per cent, respectively, in the 1970s to only about 10.9%, 1.2% and<br />

0.6%, respectively, in the 1990s. China and Indonesia substantially increased their<br />

share in world trade during this period to about 39.7% and 27.9%, respectively<br />

(Table 12.12). <strong>The</strong>re has been an increasing trend in export of cassia products from<br />

Indonesia, China and Vietnam, while the true cinnamon export could not keep<br />

up the pace. <strong>The</strong> export performance by non-producing (re-exporting) countries is<br />

given in Table 12.13. Among the re-exporting countries, US, the Netherlands and<br />
