registered an average annual growth rate of 5.2% for the period from 1971 to 2000.
The increase in world production was at the rate of 5.6% during the same period,
indicating a slight improvement in productivity. In order to examine the cyclical fluctuation
if any, growth analysis was done for each decade separately. The estimated
growth rate was 1.1 and 4.5% in period I and period II, while there was a negative
growth rate of 7.1% in period III. Production had a positive growth rate of 3.4, 6.7
and 4.1% in all the three periods, respectively. The estimated negative growth rate in
area and positive growth rate in production during the 1990s indicate the improvement
in productivity, i.e. with less area under the crop more quantity is produced.
Country-wise estimates
As regards country-wise performance the major cassia producing countries (Indonesia,
China and Vietnam) registered a positive growth rate both in area expansion and
production during all three periods (decades), i.e. their overall performance is more
