is still the leader in the production of true cinnamon. As far as India is concerned,<br />

there was no improvement in overall production, though import substitution<br />

was the main thrust in spice development during the eigth and ninth five-year<br />

plan periods (Spices Board, 1992). Against the world trend, area and production<br />

were declining in India year after year. Research programmes to improve production<br />

and productivity of cinnamon and cassia in the country are in operation<br />

at the Indian Institute of Spices Research, Calicut (Rema and Krishnamoorthy,<br />

1999).<br />

in major producing countries, semi-logarithmic growth equations are estimated and<br />
