is still the leader in the production of true cinnamon. As far as India is concerned,
there was no improvement in overall production, though import substitution
was the main thrust in spice development during the eigth and ninth five-year
plan periods (Spices Board, 1992). Against the world trend, area and production
were declining in India year after year. Research programmes to improve production
and productivity of cinnamon and cassia in the country are in operation
at the Indian Institute of Spices Research, Calicut (Rema and Krishnamoorthy,
1999).

In order to get the long-term trends in area, production and productivity globally and
in major producing countries, semi-logarithmic growth equations are estimated and
