Robertas Jucevicius Trust and collaboration are <strong>of</strong> crucial importance for <strong>the</strong> networks. The lack <strong>of</strong> trust or collaboration is <strong>the</strong> key reason why many <strong>of</strong> clusters fail. Creating mutual understanding, sharing <strong>of</strong> knowledge between networks and single companies or institutions in <strong>the</strong> business system is quite a challenge without a critical mass <strong>of</strong> trust. That is why establishing a collaboration culture in <strong>the</strong> business system is a primary task. 5. Conclusions Knowledge management functions in a business system or cluster are more complicated than in a single organisation. The business system consists <strong>of</strong> a number <strong>of</strong> independent actors – business companies, research institutions, public bodies, etc. Their needs for external knowledge are different and more complex. Most <strong>of</strong> companies in <strong>the</strong> cluster are quite small with limited absorptive capacity. Structures for collective research in <strong>the</strong> cluster should be created. Employing <strong>the</strong> internal and external competence networks as well as communities <strong>of</strong> practice could be a rational solution. Establishing <strong>the</strong> effective system <strong>of</strong> ga<strong>the</strong>ring strategic knowledge and intelligence is becoming <strong>of</strong> crucial importance in <strong>the</strong> turbulent and radically changing environment. Absorptive capacity <strong>of</strong> external knowledge is a crucial precondition for innovation in companies with limited resources both intellectual and financial. Combining such ability with ability to perceive emerging changes in <strong>the</strong>ir environments is an important precondition for competitiveness. References Baptista, R.
