The Dark Side <strong>of</strong> Social Capital in Thai Culture: an Obstruction <strong>of</strong> Learning Process within <strong>the</strong> Social Network Siwarit Pongsakornrungsilp Consumption and Sustainable Economy Research Group, School <strong>of</strong> Management, Walailak University, Nakhon Sri Thammarat, Thailand psiwarit@wu.ac.th Abstract: This paper aims to investigate whe<strong>the</strong>r and how social capital in Thai culture obstructs <strong>the</strong> continuous learning process within <strong>the</strong> social network. Netnography and ethnography were employed to collect data from an online amulet community [http://www.palungjit.com] and its <strong>of</strong>f-line activities. The findings <strong>of</strong> this paper demonstrate that <strong>the</strong> dark side <strong>of</strong> social capital obstructs <strong>the</strong> continuous learning process. Social capital in Thai Culture, ‘Arwuso’ [seniority] and ‘Kreng Jai’ [be afraid <strong>of</strong> <strong>of</strong>fending] can solve <strong>the</strong> conflicts among members, but <strong>the</strong>se cultures may obstruct <strong>the</strong> learning process by limiting internal insights and different perspectives from outsiders. Younger members tend to surrender to older members without considering <strong>the</strong> truth or rightness. The findings suggest that arguments among community members in <strong>the</strong> particular issues should be encouraged in order to enrich <strong>the</strong> resources – knowledge and information. Future researches should focus on formal organizations and different cultures, in order to generalize <strong>the</strong> findings into different contexts. Introduction Many scholars (e.g. Pongsakornrungsilp and Schroeder, 2011; Prahalad and Ramaswarmy, 2004; Grönroos, 2008) have mentioned that continuous learning process (hereafter; CLP) plays an important role in value creation within organization between company and consumer, and within a group <strong>of</strong> consumers. This learning process can be found in <strong>the</strong> social network where individual members interact in <strong>the</strong> particular issues (Morrison, 2002). However, Lave (1991) demonstrates that learning process is not only individuals’ process <strong>of</strong> knowledge and experience accumulation, but it is also <strong>the</strong> collective process <strong>of</strong> being community or network members. As seen from literatures, many scholars have used <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>ory <strong>of</strong> social capital for understanding social phenomenon and its learning process. Most <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m (e.g. Adler and Kwan 2002; Bourdieu 1986; Burt 1997; Coleman 1998; Lin 1999; Nahapiet and Ghoshal 1988; Paxton 1999; Portes, 1995; Tsai and Ghoshal 1988; and so on) have focused on <strong>the</strong> bright side <strong>of</strong> social capital e.g. trustworthy, social ties, reciprocity, consciousness <strong>of</strong> kinds, moral responsibility, and so on, but <strong>the</strong>se studies have overlooked how social capital is a threat to <strong>the</strong> learning process within <strong>the</strong> organization. Moreover, dark side <strong>of</strong> social capital within <strong>the</strong> social network is still unexplored. In order to provide <strong>the</strong> pathway for this study, <strong>the</strong> concept <strong>of</strong> social capital has been syn<strong>the</strong>sized with Service-Dominant Logic <strong>of</strong> Marketing (hereafter; S-D logic) in order to understand <strong>the</strong> CLP within <strong>the</strong> social network. In this study, <strong>the</strong> CLP is related to information, knowledge, and experience (Adjei, Noble, and Noble 2010), namely collective resources (Pongsakornrungsilp and Schroeder 2011). The netnography and ethnography have been conducted to observe this phenomenon both online and <strong>of</strong>fline activities related to <strong>the</strong> CLP in Thai culture. In Thai culture, social capitals (e.g. seniority, friendly, compromise, saving face, and so on) have been viewed through <strong>the</strong> positive lens as <strong>the</strong> attraction <strong>of</strong> Thai society (Burnard and Naiyapatana 2004; Prpic and Kanjanapanyakom 2004; Thanasankit 1999). Although social network is not <strong>the</strong> formal organization, it provides our understanding how social capital contributes to <strong>the</strong> CLP (see also Nahapiet and Ghoshal 1988). Therefore, this paper aims to investigate whe<strong>the</strong>r and how social capital can obstruct <strong>the</strong> CLP within <strong>the</strong> social network. The findings from this paper provide an additional understanding <strong>of</strong> social capital within <strong>the</strong> social network by demonstrating an obstruction <strong>of</strong> learning process in Thai culture as a dark side <strong>of</strong> social capital. 2. Theoretical perspectives The CLP is one <strong>of</strong> important processes within <strong>the</strong> social network required <strong>the</strong> relationship among members. Payne, Storbacka, and Frow (2007) have purposed <strong>the</strong> three continuous levels <strong>of</strong> learning process: remembering, internalizing, and proportioning for understanding <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> social phenomenon. On <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r hand, Lave (1991) demonstrates that <strong>the</strong>se processes as separated process. However, both perspectives are correspondent in <strong>the</strong> output <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> learning process: network members can accumulate skills and competence from this process. 411
