4 - 40 FUEL SYSTEM & EXHAUST<br />

4. Install sponge rubber pad on gas tank inlet.<br />

5. Install gas tank, use care when entering inlet pipe<br />

through floor and fender opening.<br />

6. Install gas tank straps and draw tank up into position.<br />

7. Install grommet and overflow drain hose at gas tank<br />

filler door opening.<br />

8. Push sponge rubber against underbody panel and attach<br />

3 retainer plates with phillip screws and speed nuts.<br />

9. Release jacks and lower car.<br />

10. Connect gauge wire and fuel line.<br />

REMOVAL:<br />

INTAKE MANIFOLD<br />

(8 Cylinder)<br />

1. Remove air cleaner, loosen clamp at carburetor intake,<br />

loosen bracket from air cleaner to cylinder head.<br />

2. Remove the distributor to spark plug wires and bracket<br />

from the intake manifold.<br />

3. Remove distributor cap; remove coil wire to cap and fold<br />

up spark plug wires to top of cylinder head out of the way.<br />

4. Remove the four nuts and lock-washers from the<br />

carburetor riser to the intake manifold.<br />

5. Remove the eight nuts attaching intake manifold to block<br />

and remove coil, bracket, and manifold.<br />

6. Remove all traces of old gasket material.<br />

Installation:<br />

Use new manifold gaskets and reverse procedure of<br />

removal.<br />

REMOVAL:<br />

EXHAUST MANIFOLD<br />

(8 Cylinder)<br />

1. Remove air cleaner, loosen clamp at intake, and loosen<br />

air cleaner bracket at opposite side of engine.<br />

2. Disconnect throttle linkage at carburetor.<br />

3. Disconnect gas line from carburetor to fuel pump.<br />

4. Disconnect vacuum line from carburetor to distributor<br />

and heater tube from Climatic Control.<br />

5. Remove the four nuts and lock-washers from the carburetor<br />

mounting studs and remove carburetor.<br />

6. Remove locks and nuts from exhaust pipe manifold<br />

outlet flange.<br />

7. Remove the ten nuts from the exhaust manifold outlet<br />

flanges.<br />

8. Remove four bolts from the carburetor riser, connecting<br />

outlet and inlet manifolds.<br />

NOTE: Use an air hose to blow away dirt particles before<br />

removing exhaust manifolds.<br />

9. Remove weather control drain tube from clip and move<br />

to opposite side of engine.<br />

10. Remove distributor cap, and spark plug wire bracket<br />

from cylinder head.<br />

11. Remove exhaust manifold.<br />

NOTE: Clean all old gasket material from manifold<br />

outlet ports.
