TRANSMISSION 8 - 5<br />

3. Remove governor at speedometer gear housing on cars<br />

equipped with Over-drive, Drive Master or Vacumotive<br />

Drive.<br />

4. Remove universal joint companion flange nut and companion<br />

flange from mainshaft.<br />

DO NOT HAMMER: Use Universal Joint Companion<br />

Flange Puller, Tool No. J-820, to remove a tight flange<br />

from mainshaft, Figure 3.<br />

"DO NOT USE A TAPERED BLADE SCREW<br />

DRIVER."<br />

10. Slide low and reverse shift rail out of front of case, then<br />

remove shift fork and shifter, also the shift rail interlock.<br />

11. Remove the set screw from 2nd and high shift fork, then<br />

slide the shift rail out of front of case. Remove the lock<br />

ball and spring from case.<br />

5. Remove four screws and lockwashers and lift transmission<br />

cover off cautiously to prevent the shift rail<br />

lock spring from jumping out. Remove the spring<br />

and lock ball.<br />

6. Flush out and thoroughly clean inside of case and gears.<br />

7. Re move speedometer gear housing cap screws and<br />

speedometer gear housing using care to prevent damaging<br />

the housing oil seal. Remove the speedometer drive<br />

gear.<br />

8. Remove 2nd and high shift rail stop screw.<br />

12. Remove screw and countershaft and reverse idler gear<br />

shaft lock plate, Figure (5).<br />

9. Remove lock screw from low speed shifter fork an d lock<br />

screw from the low speed shifter, Figure 4.<br />

NOTE: To remove these special self-locking screws, use<br />

a screw-driver having a straight blade or a blade with a<br />

slightly reverse taper will enter to bottom of screw slot.<br />

13. Drive countershaft out of rear end of case with Bronze<br />

Driver J-1574, Figure 6. Countershaft gear can now be<br />

lowered to bottom of case.
