5. Remove drive pinion bearing oil seal with rear axle<br />

pinion oil seal remover J-943, and lift out oil slinger and<br />

front bearing.<br />

Due to the presence of moisture in the compressed air line,<br />

be sure that all water has been removed from bearings.<br />

3. After cleaning, lubricate bearing with clean engine oil and<br />

inspect for wear, scoring and rough spots.<br />

When the rear axle has been completely disassembled,<br />

gears, carrier and housing should be thoroughly washed.<br />

NEVER Install A DIFFERENTIAL GEAR CARRIER<br />

ASSEMBLY IN A DIRTY AXLE HOUSING.<br />

DIFFERENTIAL PARTS<br />

Gears and pinions must be inspected for scored, chipped<br />

or broken teeth.<br />

Check differential pinion shaft and if grooved or scored;<br />

replace.<br />

Differential pinion thrust washers should be replaced if<br />

they appear damaged or worn.<br />

6. Remove front and rear drive pinion bearing cups from<br />

differential carrier, using remover J-2644 for front cup,<br />

Figure 21, and 2 6 4 5 f o r rear cup with handle J-872-5,<br />

Figure 22.<br />

Inspection of oil seals may be accomplished after axle has<br />

been disassembled. If the leather is scored so that a tight seal<br />

on shafts is impossible or the leather has become charred and<br />

hard, the seals should be replaced.<br />

AXLE REASSEMBLY<br />

DRIVE PINION<br />

1. Install front and rear drive pinion bearing cups in carrier<br />

using cup replacing Tool J-2943 for front cup, Figure 23,<br />

and J-2944 for rear cup, Figure 24.<br />

INSPECTION<br />

REAR AXLE BEARINGS<br />

Prior to inspection should be:<br />

1. Rotate by hand in clean kerosene or gasoline, until free<br />

from grease and oil.<br />

2. Dry out bearing with compressed air, diverting air<br />

through bearing while slowly rotating by hand, being<br />

sure that all foreign substance has been removed.<br />

NOTE: Do not spin bearing with air pressure.<br />
