11 - 26 REAR AXLE<br />

30. Turn screw on housing spreader J-5231 and with dial<br />

indicator mounted as shown in Figure 40, spread<br />

housing .020" to permit installation of differential.<br />

(Do Not spread more than this amount.)<br />

31. Install differential assembly and bearings in housing.<br />

To insure proper seating of bearings in housing, tap<br />

drive gear with a rawhide or plastic hammer.<br />

32. Install bearing caps, coating bolt threads with sealing<br />

compound. Bearing cap marks must match those on<br />

each side of housing, Figure 52. Remove housing<br />

spreader and torque bearing cap bolts to 70 to 90 foot<br />

pounds.<br />

33. Install dial indicator on housing with butt on contacting<br />

edge of drive gear tooth and check backlash<br />

between gear and pinion, turning gear and measuring<br />

in four places equally spaced around gear, Figure 52.<br />

Backlash should range between .003" and .006" and<br />

should not vary more than .002" between positions<br />

checked.<br />

34. Install housing cover using new gasket and placing<br />

identification tag under one of the screw heads.<br />

AXLE SHAFT ASSEMBLY<br />

1. Install axle shafts using care when inserting them in<br />

housing, not to damage new inner oil seals. Lubricate<br />

wheel bearings and start outer cups in housing by<br />

tapping with plastic or rawhide hammer. Use flange<br />

bolts and brake backing plates to draw bearing cups<br />

into place.<br />

2. Place housing flange bolts in position and install shim<br />

pack (right side only) removed during disassembly,<br />

between brake backing plates and flanges.<br />

3. Install wheel bearing oil seal cap gaskets, caps, lock<br />

washers and nuts. Install new oil seals in caps and<br />

tighten flange bolt nuts to 12-17 foot pounds.<br />

4. Check axle shaft end play which should range between<br />

.001" and .004". Change thickness of shim pack on<br />

right side if necessary to obtain correct end play.<br />

Shims are available in thicknesses of .003", .005",<br />

.010" and .030".<br />

INSTALLATION OF AXLE<br />

1. Place axle assembly in position on rear springs, with<br />

rubber cushions and retainers under spring seats. Engage<br />

heads of spring center bolts in holes in center of axle spring<br />

seats. If the rubber cushions have deteriorated, install new<br />

ones.<br />

2. Replace rear axle "U" bolts, lower spring plates, nuts and<br />

lock nuts. Tighten nuts to a torque of 70-80 foot pounds.<br />

3. Place roller jack under axle housing, elevate slightly and<br />

connect rear shock absorbers at lower end.<br />

4. Connect rear stabilizer to axle housing bracket.<br />

5. Place rear universal joint needle bearing cups in position in<br />

companion flange, install clamps, washers and nuts and<br />

tighten nuts to 14-17 foot pounds torque.<br />

6. Connect brake lines at rear wheel cylinders and brake hose<br />

at frame connection. Bleed brakes.<br />

7. Connect rear ends of parking brake cables to brake operating<br />

levers, position conduits and replace conduit caps.<br />

8. Place brake drum and hub assemblies on axle shafts, install<br />

washers and axle shaft nuts, tightening to 125 to 200 foot<br />

pounds. Install and spread cotter pins.<br />

9. Replace wheels, tighten hub bolts and install hub caps.<br />

10. Remove housing cover filler plug and fill housing to level<br />

of plug opening (3 lbs.) with S.A.E. 90 Hypoid or Multi-<br />

Purpose Gear Lubricant. Replace plug and tighten filler<br />

and drain plugs.<br />

11. Install rear fender shields and lower car to floor.
