Installation:<br />

Reverse procedure of removal. Check to make sure that<br />

center steering support bracket is properly secured.<br />

Refill oil pan with seven quarts of recommended oil.<br />

REMOVAL:<br />

1. Drain cooling system.<br />

2. Install new head gasket.<br />

CAUTION: Use the correct gasket - see that the gasket<br />

does not protrude inside the combustion chamber or<br />

cylinder bore line; also that water circulating holes on<br />

cylinder block face and holes in gasket line up.<br />

NOTE: Cylinder head and gasket Installation on 6<br />

cylinder can be facilitated by using two J-2969 locating<br />

studs to position the gasket and head. These studs have<br />

a screw driver slot for removal after the cylinder head<br />

has been positioned, Figure 11.<br />

2. Loosen carburetor air horn attaching screw and clamp.<br />

Remove brace from opposite side and remove air cleaner.<br />

3. Disconnect top radiator and by-pass hose.<br />

4. Disconnect heater hoses (if so equipped).<br />

5. Disconnect throttle rod at carburetor.<br />

6. Disconnect temperature gauge wire at cylinder head<br />

sender unit.<br />

7. Disconnect spark plug wires and remove spark plugs.<br />

8. Remove cylinder head stud nuts or cap screws and<br />

washers and remove cylinder head.<br />

9. Remove temperature gauge sender unit from cylinder<br />

head.<br />

Cylinder head nuts should be tightened to 45-50 foot<br />

pounds on 8 cylinder and 60-65 foot pounds on 6 cylinder,<br />

using torque wrench J-1264.<br />

Tighten each nut or cap screw in the proper sequence<br />

shown in Figure 12.<br />

REMOVAL:<br />

Follow the same procedure as outlined under "Cylinder<br />

Head Removal - 8 Cylinder" and in addition the following<br />

operation.<br />

Remove vacuum advance tube at octane selector.<br />

Installation:<br />

1: Make sure cylinder head is free from carbon and dirt.<br />

Check cylinder head with a straight edge for warpage or<br />

roughness, especially in cases of frequent "blowing" of<br />

head gaskets.<br />
