2. Remove flywheel and crankshaft oil thrower. See<br />

"Flywheel Removal".<br />

3. Remove oil pan and (oil pan baffle, 8 Cylinder).<br />

4. Remove vibration dampener lock screw, lock and remove<br />

vibration dampener using Puller J-676-C, Figure 31.<br />

DO NOT HAMMER DAMPENER to remove.<br />

5. Remove gear case cover and camshaft plunger (8<br />

cylinder).<br />

6. Using puller J-471, remove crankshaft gear, Figure 38.<br />

NOTE: It is necessary to remove the camshaft gear and<br />

timing chain on the 6 cylinder engine before crankshaft<br />

gear can be removed.<br />

7. Remove connecting rods and pistons.<br />

8. Remove front and rear main bearing caps with Pull er<br />

J-2955, remove balance of bearing caps.<br />

9. Using a rope sling and chain fall, remove the crankshaft.<br />

VIBRATION DAMPENER<br />

Regardless of the number of cylinders, the crankshaft of<br />

a gasoline engine does not rotate at a uniform or constant<br />

speed. This variation in the speed of rotation may be accounted<br />

for chiefly by the intermittent power impulses .and<br />

results in what is termed torsional vibration, a momentary<br />

winding and unwinding of the crankshaft.<br />

To eliminate this as far as is possible the vibration<br />

dampener whose inner and outer members are separated by<br />

rubber facings, is mounted at the front end of the crankshaft.<br />

Through the flexing of this disk the momentum of the<br />

outer member of the vibration dampener opposes the accelerated<br />

and decelerated rotation of the crankshaft.<br />

REMOVAL:<br />

1. Remove the vibration dampener lock screw, lock.<br />

2. Using Puller J-676C, Figure 34, remove vibration<br />

dampener assembly.<br />

NOTE: Do Not Hammer on dampener to remove.<br />

NOTE: Before replacing crankshaft, check condition of<br />

crankshaft journals and pins, bearings, and bearing clearances.<br />

Clean the oil pan and screen and blow out oil lines.<br />

To Install, reverse procedure of removal, check the<br />

information contained under "Main Bearings, Connecting<br />

Rods, and Pistons; Remove and Replace Engine; Remove<br />

an d Replace Clutch; Remove and Replace Timing Gears or<br />

Timing Chain and Gears, Vibration Dampener Installation,<br />

Flywheel Installation and Clutch and Transmission Installation."<br />

NOTE: On 8 cylinder engines, before Installing the flywheel<br />

to the crankshaft, check to make sure that lower<br />

half oil retainer fits squarely and tightly against the upper<br />

half retainer. Also make sure that gaskets are in good<br />

condition.<br />

Screw holes in cap mounted oil retainer are elongated<br />

to permit it to be squarely contacted with the<br />

upper retainer. If contacting faces are nicked, Install<br />

new retainer as a gap or other discontinuity of contact<br />

will permit loss of oil.<br />

NOTE: Should the dampener be disassembled to replace<br />

the rubber facings be sure that the center punch marks<br />

line up and that punch marks are opposite the key way in<br />

hub in order to retain proper balance.
