OVERDRIVE 9 - 9<br />

CONTROL SWITCH<br />

The control switch is attached to the Overdrive housing<br />

by two 10-24 screws. Before reInstalling check for damaged<br />

gasket and defective wire terminals.<br />

SOLENOID<br />

Detach the solenoid by removing the two mounting<br />

screws and turning solenoid 1/4 turn clockwise while pulling<br />

out. To Install, reverse this procedure. After holes in<br />

flange and housing are lined up, but before Installing cap<br />

screws, pull straight out on solenoid. If it can be pulled out,<br />

the ball at the end of the solenoid rod was improperly<br />

Installed (not locked in the pawl.)<br />

OIL SEAL (OD. MAINSHAFT)<br />

1. Disconnect universal joint at transmission companion<br />

flange.<br />

2. Remove the bolts attaching the propeller shaft center<br />

bearing support bracket and move propeller shaft rearward<br />

to clear companion flange.<br />

3. Remove the companion flange nut, washer, and with<br />

puller tool J-820, remove the companion flange.<br />

4. Pry out oil seal from rear of case.<br />

NOTE: DO NOT DAMAGE overdrive case bore during<br />

this operation.<br />

To Install, reverse procedure of removal and coat outside<br />

of seal with a film of white lead and drive seal into place<br />

with a suitable driver. Tighten companion flange nut to<br />

90100 foot pounds.<br />

OIL SEAL (OD. CONTROL SHAFT)<br />

Remove control lever and pry out seal with sharp punch.<br />

Coat outside of new seal with white lead and drive seal into<br />

place with a tubular driver having an inside diameter of<br />

5/8" and outside diameter of 15/16"<br />

SERVICING UNITS REQUIRING<br />

REMOVAL OF OVERDRIVE<br />

HOUSING ONLY<br />

Repairs to the overdrive case, overdrive mainshaft, mainshaft<br />

ring gear, free wheeling cam, pinion cage assembly,<br />

stationary gear, shift rail and fork assembly, overdrive mainshaft<br />

rear and front bearing, overdrive main-shaft oil seal,<br />

speedometer drive gear, solenoid pawl and interlock plunger<br />

may be performed underneath the car by removing the overdrive<br />

housing without disturbing the transmission. See<br />

"Overdrive Housing Removal". However, if the transmission<br />

mainshaft, overdrive adapter, or transmission mainshaft<br />

bearing are to be replaced, it will be necessary to proceed as<br />

outlined under "Transmission and Overdrive Removal".<br />

OVERDRIVE HOUSING REMOVAL<br />

1. Place car on stand jacks.<br />

2. Remove drain plugs and drain transmission and overdrive<br />

cases.<br />

3. Disconnect governor switch and overdrive solenoid and<br />

control switch wires.<br />

4. Disconnect universal joint at overdrive companion flange.<br />

5. Remove the bolts attaching center bearing support bracket<br />

and move propeller shaft rearward to clear companion flange.<br />

6. Remove speedometer cable and speedometer driven gear.<br />

7. Disconnect overdrive control cable at control shaft lever.<br />

8. Remove the companion flange nut, washer and with puller<br />

J-820, remove the companion flange.
