ELECTRICAL SYSTEM 6 - 15<br />

BRUSH REPLACEMENT:<br />

Generator brushes may be replaced without disassembling<br />

generator. Brushes should be replaced if they are oil<br />

soaked or worn to less than 1/2 of their original length.<br />

1. Remove cover band.<br />

2. Disconnect brush leads.<br />

3. Lift brush arms and remove brushes.<br />

4. Install new brushes in holders and connect brush leads.<br />

5. Cut a strip of 00 sandpaper the exact width of commutator.<br />

6. Lift each brush and slide sandpaper under brush with<br />

sanded side against brush.<br />

7. Pull sandpaper so that brush is forced against holder.<br />

Once or twice is sufficient. (Brush seating stone may be<br />

used to seat new brushes.)<br />

8. Blow sand and carbon dust out of generator.<br />

9. Run generator under load to obtain perfect brush seating.<br />

10. ReInstall cover.<br />

GENERATOR ASSEMBLY:<br />

6. Install armature in frame so that dowel pin enters hole<br />

in drive head.<br />

7. Soak bronze bearing in commutator end head in engine<br />

oil and pack grease pocket with high temperature grease.<br />

8. Assemble commutator end head on armature.<br />

9. Install through bolts - make sure lower bolt passes under<br />

field connection insulation.<br />

10. As through bolts are tightened, strike the generator<br />

frame a sharp blow with a fiber hammer to align armature<br />

shaft and bearing.<br />

11. Install brushes and attach brush leads. (Brushes should<br />

be seated on commutator with 00 sandpaper or brush<br />

seating stone.)<br />

12. Install Woodruff key, drive pulley, lock-washer and<br />

shaft nut.<br />

ARMATURE SHAFT END PLAY:<br />

1. Mount dial indicator on drive head end with plunger in<br />

line with and touching end of shaft.<br />

2. Move to both extreme positions and read end play.<br />

3. If end play is not within .003 to .010 inches, improper<br />

assembly is indicated.<br />

1. Pack ball bearing one-half full of high temperature, nonfiber<br />

grease.<br />

2. Soak felt washers in engine oil before assembly.<br />

3. Install felt washer, retainers and bearing in drive head end.<br />

4. Install bearing retainer gasket, felt washer, and bearing<br />

retainer.<br />

5. Install snap ring on armature and assemble on drive head<br />

end.<br />
