FRONT SUSPENSION 12 - 13<br />

CAUSE:<br />

EXCESSIVE PLAY IN<br />

STEERING SYSTEM<br />

1. Steering gear or steering connections either adjusted too<br />

loose or worn.<br />

2. Steering spindle bearings worn.<br />

3. Front wheel bearings incorrectly adjusted or worn.<br />

REMEDY:<br />

Refer to the respective sections of this manual for corrections<br />

of the above conditions.<br />

CAUSE:<br />

STEERING ERRATIC WITH<br />

BRAKES APPLIED<br />

1. Low or unequal tire pressure.<br />

2. Brakes incorrectly o r unevenly adjusted.<br />

3. Oil soaked brake lining.<br />

4. Coil springs weak.<br />

5. Insufficient or uneven caster.<br />

REMEDY:<br />

1. Inflate tires.<br />

2. Adjust brakes.<br />

3. Replace lining. (Use genuine <strong>Hudson</strong> brake lining).<br />

4. Replace springs or shim as necessary.<br />

5. Steering spindle o r spindle support bent. Refer to Figures<br />

20 and 21.<br />

4. Wheel bearings adjusted too tight.<br />

5. Incorrect toe-in, unequal caster, or camber.<br />

6. Coil springs sag.<br />

7. Rear axle shifted.<br />

8. Front frame bent or broken.<br />

9. Front stabilizer not centralized.<br />

REMEDY:<br />

1. Inflate tires.<br />

2. Replace brake lining.<br />

3. Check shock absorbers for lack of fluid.<br />

4. Check wheels for binding with front wheels off the floor.<br />

Adjust the bearings and lubri-<br />

5. Correct caster, camber, and toe-in. Check steering spindle,<br />

spindle support, or steering arm to determine if these<br />

parts are damaged. Refer to Figures 20 and 21.<br />

6. Check riding height and replace springs if necessary.<br />

Refer to Figure 6.<br />

7. Check rear spring clips and tighten as necessary. Rear<br />

spring center bolt should be checked to determine that it is<br />

not sheared. A distance from the rear spring pivot bolt<br />

to axle housing should be checked. This distance should be<br />

the same on both sides.<br />

8. Check frame for breakage and proper alignment.<br />

9. Adjust and tighten front stabilizer arms.<br />

CAUSE:<br />

CAR PULLS TO ONE SIDE<br />

1. Low or uneven tire pressure.<br />

CAUSE:<br />

SCUFFED TIRES<br />

2. Oil soaked brake lining.<br />

3. Shock absorbers not functioning or only partly operating.<br />

1. Tires incorrectly inflated.<br />

2. Incorrect toe -in or incorrect toe-out on turns.
