6 - 22 ELECTRICAL SYSTEM<br />

6. Remove breaker plate screws (C) and bearing retainer<br />

clips, and lift out breaker plate.<br />

Items 7 through 10 apply to both 6 and 8 cylinder<br />

engines.<br />

7. Remove oil wick from cam and remove hairpin retainer<br />

from oil well.<br />

8. Pull cam off shaft.<br />

9. Remove centrifugal weights and springs.<br />

NOTE: Use care to prevent distortion of springs.<br />

10. Drive pin from collar or gear on shaft below distributor<br />

housing and remove shaft from top of distributor.<br />

ASSEMBLY, 6 and 8 CYLINDER:<br />

1. Install new shaft and bushings in distributor base if<br />

clearance between shaft and bushings is greater than<br />

.005". Soak bushings in engine oil for 15 minutes before<br />

Installing shaft.<br />

2. Install distributor shaft, thrust washer,. collar or gear<br />

and pin.<br />

3. Check distributor shaft end play for minimum of .010".<br />

4. Install centrifugal weights and springs.<br />

5. Install cam, hairpin retainer, and oil wick. Apply a<br />

drop of engine oil to centrifugal weight pivots and<br />

cam slots.<br />

6. Pack breaker plate bearing 1/2 full of high melting<br />

point grease and Install breaker plate, bearing retainers<br />

and breaker plate screws. On 6 cylinder Models,<br />

Install breaker points and condenser on breaker plate<br />

before Installing plate. Install plate and distributor<br />

cap clips and screws and Install primary lead screw.<br />

(Do not allow wire from breaker arm to primary<br />

terminal to ground on breaker plate.)<br />

7. Install vacuum control unit.<br />

8. Replace stationary contact, breaker arm, and condenser<br />

and adjust point gap.<br />

9. Attach primary and condenser leads to clip on breaker<br />

arm spring and check spring tension.<br />

NOTE: Make sure ground wire (E), Figure 17, is securely<br />

attached to upper and lower sections of breaker<br />

plate and that condenser lead and mounting are tight.<br />

10. Coat cam lobes lightly with water pump grease and<br />

soak the oil wick with engine oil. Place a drop of light<br />

engine oil on the breaker arm pivot.<br />

11. Replace rotor.
