Intrinsic PEEP – PEEPi<br />

Intrinsic PEEP is measured in two phases: <strong>EvitaXL</strong> keeps the<br />

inspiration and expiration valves closed during measuring<br />

phase 1, so that it is impossible for gas to flow into the ventilation<br />

system from inspiration and to escape from it. During this<br />

closed phase, pressure is equalized between the lungs and<br />

the ventilation system. <strong>EvitaXL</strong> measures the pressure curve.<br />

Measuring phase 1 is ended:<br />

— when there is no further change in the pressure curve but at<br />

the earliest after 0.5 seconds,<br />

— at the latest after 3 seconds in adult mode or after<br />

1.5 seconds in paediatric mode.<br />

The start value corresponds to PEEP, and the value at the end<br />

of the closed phase is the Intrinsic PEEP.<br />

At the end of measuring phase 1, <strong>EvitaXL</strong> opens the expiration<br />

valve and measures the expiratory flow generated by intrinsic<br />

PEEP during measuring phase 2. During this period, the lung<br />

is depressurised to PEEP. Measuring phase 2 is ended:<br />

— when the expiration flow has returned to 0 but at the earliest<br />

after 0.5 seconds.<br />

— at the latest after 7 seconds in adult mode or after<br />

3.5 seconds in paediatric mode.<br />

The integrated flow corresponds to the air volume trapped in<br />

the lungs Vtrap by Intrinsic PEEP.<br />

Measuring times of measuring phase 1 for Intrinsic PEEP:<br />

For adult ventilation max. 3 seconds<br />

For paediatric ventilation max. 1.5 seconds<br />

Measuring times of measuring phase 2 for Vtrap:<br />

For adult ventilation max. 7 seconds<br />

For paediatric ventilation max. 3.5 seconds<br />
