Newspapers were started, descriptions of <strong>the</strong> fauna, flora, andgeology of <strong>the</strong> country were published, and gentleman amateurs of science begankeeping records of <strong>the</strong> wea<strong>the</strong>r, of signs in <strong>the</strong> heavens, and of tremblings of <strong>the</strong>Earth.
