For some years, one station with three short-period instrumentshas been operated by <strong>the</strong> Instituto Geografico Universitario of <strong>the</strong> Universityof Santo Domingo. Records are available through <strong>the</strong> local office of <strong>the</strong>Inter-American Geodetic Survey.Morocco. There has been at least one seismograph in operation by <strong>the</strong> Universityof Rabat since about 1934; all seismograms have been microfilmed.Cape Verde. The National Institute of Technical Investigation was given a seismographby <strong>the</strong> U.S.S.R., but was not yet in operation at <strong>the</strong> time of my visit(1980).Sierra Leone. The Geological Survey Department has a Chinese seismographwhich records six channels, but is used only for engineering purposes. There is noo<strong>the</strong>r history of seismic work in Sierra Leone.Ivory Coast. The Lamto station is well-known, though its equipment may not be<strong>the</strong> best. The Director said he would be happy to operate any better equipment ifprovided to <strong>the</strong>m. All <strong>the</strong>ir records will be available for microfilming and could behandled by observatory personnel.w. The French Office de la Recherche Scientifique et Technique Outre-mer(ORSTOM) organization used to operate a seismograph in Lome, but <strong>the</strong> site wasnoisy and recording was discontinued. The records were sent to <strong>the</strong> Paris office andpresumably can be copied <strong>the</strong>re.Nineria. The Physics Department of <strong>the</strong> University of Ibadan has only one seismometerfor classroom work; similarly, <strong>the</strong> Physics Department of Ahmadu BelloUniversity. The latter would, however, be interested in operating a WWSSN station.Niger. The Bureau of Geological and Mining Research informed me that <strong>the</strong>rehad never been any seismographs operating in Niger.Zaire. They have three seismographs located at Binza, Karavia, and (Bunia).They have a recurring problem getting photo paper and parts, so recording is intermittent.Copying of <strong>the</strong>ir records was not discussed, but <strong>the</strong>y have technical staffwho could probably handle it.Zambia. The Geological Survey Department has a current cooperative programwith <strong>the</strong> University of Finland, but said that any old records would have beenobtained by <strong>the</strong> Goetz Observatory.Malawi. The Geological Survey Department cooperates with <strong>the</strong> Goetr Observatorywhich manages <strong>the</strong> station at <strong>the</strong> Blantyre airport. Any old recordings wouldhave been done by <strong>the</strong> Goetz Observatory.Mozambiaue. Four stations are located in Maputo, Nampula, Tete, and Changelane,all operated by a visiting Soviet group at <strong>the</strong> Meteorological Service. Copyingof <strong>the</strong> records was not discussed. No information was obtained on any earlier recordings.Botswana. There have never been any seismic stations operated in Botswana.The Geological Survey of Botswana is interested in starting one, especially in <strong>the</strong>Okavango area. They have been discussing this matter with a Swedish group.Lesotho. According to <strong>the</strong> Department of Physics of <strong>the</strong> University of Lesotho,no seismograph has ever operated in Lesotho.
