ConclusionThe smoked-paper seismograms from the first, or historical, Cagigal Observatoryin Caracas were recorded on a two-component horizontal Wiechert seismograph. These records may contribute significantly to the relocation of several importantand large earthquakes that occurred from 1934 to 1953. A careful reevaluation ofthe dynamic response curve of the seismograph and the records must be made topermit this information to be used with later data from CAR and other internationalseismological observatories, to improve knowledge on earthquake activity andtectonics.AKNOWLEDGEMENTSThe author of this paper likes to thank Dr. W. H. K. Lee and his staff for theirtechnical help.REFERENCESCenteno Grau, M. (1940). Estudios Sismologicos, Litografia Comercio, Caracas.U.S. National Geophysical Data Center (1972).
