ConclusionThe smoked-paper seismograms from the first, or historical, Cagigal Observatoryin Caracas were recorded on a two-component horizontal Wiechert seismograph.These records may contribute significantly to the relocation of several importantand large earthquakes that occurred from 1934 to 1953. A careful reevaluation ofthe dynamic response curve of the seismograph and the records must be made topermit this information to be used with later data from CAR and other internationalseismological observatories, to improve knowledge on earthquake activity andtectonics.AKNOWLEDGEMENTSThe author of this paper likes to thank Dr. W. IntroductionThe history of the seismological station of Bogoti has to be divided in two differentperiods, not only because of the change of its location and the kind of itsinstruments, but also because of its time and duration.The first period comprises the years from 1923 to 1940, during which the stationwas situated in the San RartolomC College at the central part of Bogoti; itsinstruments were of mechanical type recording on smoked papers.The second period comprises the years from 1942 to 1960, and later years. Thestation site was the same as the present one in the San BartolomC College at thenortheast border of the city in the section called La Merced. In this period, besidesthe mechanical Wiechert seismograph, the station was equipped with electric andphotographic instruments.2. First Period (1923-1940)2.1 InstrumentsIn the year of 1916, after finishing their scientific studies at the Coldgio Miximo,which the Society of Jksus had in the town of Oiia, Burgos province (Spain), Fr.Enrique PQrez Arbeliez and Fr. Carlos Ortk, Colombian Jesuits, took a short coursein Seismology with the Rev. Ek. Manuel Ma. Sanchez-Navarro Newman, Director ofthe Seismological Observatory at Granada (Spain). As a consequence of this coursethey ordered to the workshop “Automitica” of Torres Quevedo in Madrid, theconstruction of a seismograph of bifilar type entirely similar to those functioning atthe Granada seismic station. For different reasons this seismograph did not reachBogoti until some years later. However, it still remained stored for some time,because no adequate site could be found, which would be sufficiently protected andremoved from traffic and other machinery, that was functioning on nearby placesand even in the same building of San Bartolome College.During the yearly vacations and thanks to the activity and enthusiasm of F.Arbelbz, the instrument was provisionally installed in the ground 000r of San BartolomdCollege at a site near the principal court and to its north side (today littleplaza Camilo Torres, Carrera 7, calle 10). Contrary to what one would expect, theseismograph showed more or less insensitive to the short period vibration, comingfrom traffic and motors functioning in the College building, but it was highlysensitive to long period oscillations produced by seismic events.On the 17th of January, 1922, the first seismogram of a distant earthquake wasrecorded. It was exhibited on the display windows of the Merss. Jose ManuelRodriguez shop for public admiration.
