12 W. H. K. Lee, H. Meyers, and K. ShimazakiThe fourth session was a visit to the Japan Meteorological Agency. Dr. N.Yarnakaws gave an introductory lecture on the various seismological activities ofthe Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA). It was then followed by an extensive tourof the JMA facilities for processing and analysis of seismic data. The tour wasconducted by Dr. M. Yamamoto, and the Workshop participants were welcomedby Dr. S. Suyehiro. The fifth session began with Dr. R. D. Adanis describing the activities of theInternational Seismological Centre, and Mr. H. Meyers reporting the role of theWorld Data Center in the Historical Seisnlogram Filming Project. It was thenfollowed by eight papers on the status of seismograms in various regions: Dr. Y.Unieda (Abuyama Observatory, Japan), Rev. S. S. Su (the Philippines), Mr. H.K. Lam (Hong Kong), Dr. D. Denham (Australia), Drs. K. Hosoyama and M.Ooe (Mizusawa Observatory, Japan), Dr. Y. B. Tsai (Taiwan), Mr. R. Soetardjo(Indonesia), arid Dr. H. N. Srivastava (India). In addition, Dr. R. Inoue describedtlie digitization and processing of the JMA strong motion records from several greatearthquakes. The sixth session began with three additional papers on the status of seismograms:China (Mr. K. Qu), the Philippines (Mr. R. Valenzuela), and the Oceanicarea (abstract by Mr. G. A. Eiby and comments by Dr. R. D. Adams). It was thenfollowed by a general discussion on a plan to film seismograms in Asia, Australia, and the Oceania area. The participants then passed eight resolutions given below.3. Resolutions by the Participants(1) Realizing the great value to practical seismological research (particularly to assessmentof earthquake hazards) of those historical seismograms still existingthroughout the world and the danger of their further deterioration or loss, urgesall appropriate agencies, both national and international, to undertake a programto microfilm these seismograms and associated records and bulletins andto adequately preserve the originals whenever practical.(2) Noting with satisfaction that the United States of America has already madeconsiderable progress in filming its historical seismograms and associated materialsand in providing copies to the World Data Center A, uraes that thisnational program be completed as soon as possible.(3) NotinR that many developing countries do not have the technical equipment orexperience to carry out the microfilming of their seismological records and awareof the experience of the World Data Center A in this field, urges Unesco or otherappropriate agencies to provide the necessary support to World Data Centers toassist countries in participating in the Historical Seismogram Filming Project.(4) Noting that the major part of any program for microfilming seismological recordsis the adequate sorting, preparation, and annotation of materials to be copied, recommends that funds be made available to national agencies to enable themto undertake this preparatory work, as well as to complete tlie filming.(5) Realizing the importance of encouraging national and regional seismologicalresearch in countries participating in the microfilming program, recommendsthat at least two copies are made when seismological records are filmed, one ofwhich shall remain at a suitable agency in the country of origin, and one to bedeposited at a World Data Center.
