Seismic source zone of Burma - Thailand - Indochina. In zone I (South Yunnan-Kwangsi), the most destructive earthquake was theQiongzhou earthquake of July 1605, having maximum intensity XI (M.M. scale)at Hainan Island. The main seismic zone is located in South Yunnan Province, north of the Red River fault between the Red River fault and the area where theleft-lateral Kang Ting fault seems to terminate near the Red River fault, as shownin Figure 5.Figure 6 shows the location and date of historical earthquakes during the period1900 to 1983 having magnitude greater than 7. The greatest earthquake (magnitude8.1) occurred during June 1941, and waa located in the NW of the Andaman Islands(zone J).
