Introduction to the Symposium 15of all records; (c) That the USSR be asked to extend its existing programmeof copying to include copying of all records from at least one selected station;(d) That the European Seismological Commission select at least two stations inWestern and Central Europe whose records should be completely copied, andreport their selection to their General Assembly in 1984; (e) That developingcountries with long-est ablished stations such as those at Helwan (Egypt) andTacubaya (Mexico) be given special encouragement and assistance to copy theirrecords.(3) Realizing that for some studies even the best copies are inferior to originals, arid that documents and archival material other than instrumental records containsdata of importance for seismological research, urges: (a) that IASPEI andUnesco broaden the scope of the Working Group to consider other historical material, such as catalogues, station bulletins, notebooks containing unpublishedmaterials, instrumental constants, time corrections and the like, and documentsdescribing pre-instruniental earthquakes, and to assess the desirability and methodsavailable for preserving them, (b) that World Data Centers A and B shouldpublish a comprehensive list of seismograms that may still be consulted, andshould complete the microfilming of its global collection of station bulletins, (c)that all observatories retain their original records, and store them in the mannerbest calculated to preserve them and extend their useful life, and (d) that participatingnations make their holding of historical material available to WorldData Centers for copying.(4) Concerned at the number of records of important earthquakes missing fromsurviving files of historical seismograms, urges that observatories and individualseismologists holding records borrowed from other stations, or copies of missingoriginals, endeavor to return them to the most appropriate organization in theircountry of origin without delay.
