The project of preparing a globaldirectory of seismological stations by WDC-A is very important in this respect. SeePoppe (1980), for U.S.A. and Canada, and Miyamura (1985) for Eastern Asia.In addition, even during the well operated period, a good quality station sometimesfailed to record an earthquake which was recorded by a less qualified stationin the same region. For example, let us examine the ISS, October - December,1953. Nanking and Zo-Se reported readings for about 40 earthquakes, but in addition,Nanking reported readings for about 10 more earthquakes, suggesting Nankingcould be a representative station of the region. However, it seems advisable to selectZo-Se also aa an auxiliary station. The readings of October 24, 1953, 23:19, 35.3 S,180 E, Region 12, No. 001, MRO = 6.2 are reported by ZeSe but not by Nanking, although similar size earthquakes from the same region: (1) November 16, 1953,17:17, 21.2 S, 168.5 El Region 14, No. 026, MRO = 6.0; (2) November 25, 1953,17:48, 17.9 S, 176.5 El Region 12, No. 210, MRO = 6.0; and (3) November 27, 1953,23:01, 18.3 S, 176.5 E, Region 12, No. 209, MRO = 6.2 are reported by Nanking, but the last two are not reported by ZeSe.Praha and Cheb are also a similar pair of stations. For the last 3 months of1953, Praha reported about 30 events in ISS, but Cheb reported only 20. However, for the earthquake October 13, 1953, 08:53, 30.0 N, 114.0 W, Region 4, No. 017,MRO = 6.2, Cheb reported readings but Praha did not.Another circumstance to necessitate the auxiliary stations will occur as follows. It often happens that the seismograms of an important earthquake cannot be foundin the chronologically kept seismogram files, mostly because the seismograms wereused by certain seismologists and have not been returned to the original file, while
