Figure 12. A section along A-A' of Figure 9. Mainshock (location and sense of slip) and aftershocks of 29 November1978 (Ms = 7.8) suggests a width of strong coupling between <strong>the</strong> plates of about 80 km. Small open and solid circles areaftershocks with magnitude M < 4 and M 2 4, respectively. The earthquake of 15 January 1931 (Ms = 8.0) was located justbeyond <strong>the</strong> zone of strong coupling and most likely broke <strong>the</strong> entire Cocos plate. If <strong>the</strong> normal fault earthquakes of 1937 and1973 occurred in <strong>the</strong> subducted Cocos plate <strong>the</strong>n <strong>the</strong> dip of <strong>the</strong> interface is about 15'.
