Historical Seismicity and Earthquake Catalogues for Indian Region 343(2) A number of earthquakes have occurred within the Indian plate. Many of theseare associated with transverse lineaments, which are broadly aligned parallel to themovement of the Indian plate. Collection of data for earthquakes of M < 5 willenable us to understand the extent and activity of these lineaments. Also, they mayreveal the relationship between small tremors and bigger shocks, as brought out bythe preliminary observations from the new catalogue for peninsular India presentedhere and supported by high-gain port able microseismograph observations.(3) After the great Assam earthquake of 1950, there is a relative decrease of seismicactivity in the Indian region. With the exception of Kinnaur earthquake of January1975, the magnitude of earthquakes has rarely exceeded 6.0. This quiescence period, during which strain appears to be accumulating near the Indian-Eurasian plateboundary, cautions us to investigate the nature of stresses of past earthquakesin greater detail and to study the possibility of identifying premonitory changes(Srivastava, 1983).
