96 Rachélle Gautonthat of Bantu language corpora, and when the sizes of corpora of conjunctivelyand disjunctively written Bantu languages are compared with one another, comparingthe number of running words will not give an accurate representation ofcomparable size. For example, because of the difference in the writing systems ofEnglish and Zulu, a Zulu word such as akakayijwayeli corresponds to an Englishsentence consisting of the seven words ‘he is not used to it yet’. (Cf. Gauton & DeSchryver 2004:153 and Prinsloo & De Schryver 2002).During the workshop sessions, the corpora are then used to train students inthe skills as discussed in Subsections 3.4.1 to 3.4.3.3.4.1 Mining for possible translation equivalentsStudents are trained in how to mine for possible translation equivalents for SLterms that are not lexicalised (in a standardised form) in the TL and that cannottherefore be found in any of the standard sources on the language. Students aretaught how to obtain terminology in their TL by querying existing TL texts with(a) WordSmith Tools (Scott 1999) and (b) ParaConc (Barlow 2003). For example,students build their own DIY HIV/AIDS corpus in their TL, as well as a comparableSL corpus, and then use WordSmith Tools to semi-automatically extractrelevant term candidates. See the example below of a list of potential Afrikaanstranslation equivalents obtained in this manner 4 (see Table 2).Table 2.
