BEYTrans 1435.2 Translation memory managementTo integrate document management with TM, we need to define efficient datastructures that satisfy two requirements: (i) maximum provision of recyclableunits and (ii) unified management of translated documents. The first requirementderives from the needs of individual translators, who look for relevant linguisticunits in existing translations. The second requirement derives from the needs ofthe manager of the community in which translators participate or from the communityitself. To fulfill it, we found TMX (the LISA translation memory exchangestandard) to be suitable (LISA 2007). TMX is an XML format which was developedto simplify the storage/exchange of multilingual TMs (Bey et al. 2006b; Boitet etal. 2005). Annotation is done in our environment in accordance with the TMXstandard, and the 3-tier model (Saha 2005).Our 3-tier model and its various information levels (metadata annotation,sentence and language unit annotations) are illustrated in Fig. 2. The result ofsegmentation is an annotated document, which is used to automatically consulttheTMandthelanguageresourcesintheWikistore.Figure 1. 144 Youcef Bey, Christian Boitet and Kyo KageuraTaking into consideration the advantages of the 3-tier model and the TMXstandard capabilities, we decided to use the TMX standard and extended it forhandling collaborative translation.Our proposed TMX-C format is an adaptation of TMX that deals with threelevels during segmentation for constructing the TM format and for supportingcollaborative Wiki information.The segments and XML metadata tags of TMX-C are defined as follows:Table 3. The second and third levels are relative tolanguage units, i.e., sentences at the second level and various language units (quotations,collocations, technical terms, proper names, idioms, etc.) at the third level.These units can be automatically detected using sentence-boundary tools (Ling-Pipe 2007), but translators can manually control these units during translationand editing.
