chapter 4CORPÓGRAFO V.4Tools <strong>for</strong> educat<strong>in</strong>g translatorsBel<strong>in</strong>da MaiaUniversity of Porto and L<strong>in</strong>guateca, PortugalIt is clearly essential <strong>for</strong> future translators to learn to use the available translationtechnology but, given the many l<strong>in</strong>guistic skills translators also need to acquire,the process needs to focus not just on the ability to use the technology, but also onencourag<strong>in</strong>g a good understand<strong>in</strong>g of the objectives, possibilities and limitationsof the technology itself. Skilful use of the technology will come later after practice<strong>in</strong> the professional contexts <strong>in</strong> which it is needed. An understand<strong>in</strong>g of theproblems posed by <strong>in</strong>tegrat<strong>in</strong>g technology <strong>in</strong>to both the curriculum and teach<strong>in</strong>gpractice led us to develop the Corpógrafo at the PoloCLUP of L<strong>in</strong>guateca 1 atthe University of Porto. It allows <strong>for</strong> the build<strong>in</strong>g and analysis of parallel andcomparable corpora, extraction and management of term<strong>in</strong>ology, as well as thecollection and analysis of lexical items, particularly multi-word expressions thatare relevant to text, genre or discourse analysis. It is a research environment<strong>for</strong> autonomous study, but it also offers various possibilities <strong>for</strong> education <strong>in</strong>translation, text analysis and term<strong>in</strong>ology management, and has the advantageover commercial software of be<strong>in</strong>g freely available onl<strong>in</strong>e.1.
