X<strong>Topics</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>Language</strong> <strong>Resources</strong> <strong>for</strong> <strong>Translation</strong> and Localisationshould also be an <strong>in</strong>centive <strong>for</strong> self-discovery and improvement <strong>in</strong> other translationoperational sett<strong>in</strong>gs.In Chapter 5, Corpus exploitation <strong>for</strong> translation teach<strong>in</strong>g and research: stateof the art, Colom<strong>in</strong>as & Badia exam<strong>in</strong>e the weaknesses and strengths of currentcorpora <strong>in</strong>terfaces and exemplifly search types that can be relevant <strong>in</strong> translationtra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g contexts or <strong>for</strong> translation research purposes, with a view to identify thebasic requirements a corpora <strong>in</strong>terface should satisfy. The lack of sufficiently largecorpora representative of modern languages is currently be<strong>in</strong>g solved by means ofweb corpora, their analysis provid<strong>in</strong>g evidence of work done regard<strong>in</strong>g this matterbut also of the need <strong>for</strong> further work.Sometimes not only how to better access corpora is at stake but also how tocreate translation corpora <strong>for</strong> less resourced languages. In Chapter 6, The Use ofCorpora <strong>in</strong> Translator Tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the African <strong>Language</strong> Classroom: A Perspectivefrom South Africa, Gauton draws on her expertise with electronic text corpora,corpus query tools and translation memory tools to enable the African languagetranslator to m<strong>in</strong>e target language texts <strong>for</strong> possible translation equivalents, co<strong>in</strong>terms <strong>in</strong> the absence of standardised practices, and re-use exist<strong>in</strong>g translation toatta<strong>in</strong> term<strong>in</strong>ology standardisation. Future action l<strong>in</strong>es <strong>in</strong>clude further standardisationwork and the trans<strong>for</strong>mation of the multil<strong>in</strong>gual student output site <strong>in</strong>to alarge and comprehensive language resource available to external parties.In a radically different work sett<strong>in</strong>g but equally aware of local constra<strong>in</strong>tsand requirements, de Sa<strong>in</strong>t Robert p<strong>in</strong>po<strong>in</strong>ts <strong>in</strong> Chapter 7, CAT tools <strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>ternationalorganisations: lessons learnt from the experience of the <strong>Language</strong>s Service of theUnited Nations Office at Geneva, that the usefulness of such tools does not have tobe taken <strong>for</strong> granted.
