VIII <strong>Topics</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>Language</strong> <strong>Resources</strong> <strong>for</strong> <strong>Translation</strong> and Localisationseveral angles and <strong>in</strong> relation to current trends of multil<strong>in</strong>gual content processes,be<strong>in</strong>g appeal<strong>in</strong>g to the heterogeneous readership of the Benjam<strong>in</strong>s <strong>Translation</strong>Library (BTL) 3 series worldwide.Students, educators, researchers and professionals related to the translationand localisation arena will remember that <strong>in</strong> a not so distant past there seemed tobe two extremes, represented at one end by those exclusively preoccupied with thethen new market tools (essentially, commercial translation memories products),and at the other end by the ones that felt somehow threatened by an <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g degreeof translation automation and kept defend<strong>in</strong>g human translation as the onlypossible alternative. What LR4Trans does is to underl<strong>in</strong>e the <strong>in</strong>teraction of all theelectronic language resources, applications and technologies that may be used <strong>in</strong>(learn<strong>in</strong>g about) the process of translat<strong>in</strong>g or localis<strong>in</strong>g – without <strong>for</strong>gett<strong>in</strong>g aboutall the human agents that may also be <strong>in</strong>volved there<strong>in</strong>, from technical writers,doma<strong>in</strong> specialists, and corporate l<strong>in</strong>guistsofvariousk<strong>in</strong>dstocomputationall<strong>in</strong>guistsand future translators, to name a few. In other words, the approach beh<strong>in</strong>dLR4Trans is <strong>in</strong>tegrative and <strong>in</strong>cludes data, tools and human agents, allow<strong>in</strong>g <strong>for</strong>targeted yet varied discussion po<strong>in</strong>ts. This is one of the ma<strong>in</strong> features of the bookyou are now hold<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> your hands, its array of <strong>in</strong>novative topics <strong>for</strong> the languageprofessional.A truly practical and applied l<strong>in</strong>guistic book <strong>in</strong> nature that is highly connectedwith multil<strong>in</strong>gual technologies as used <strong>in</strong> translation and localisation processesmust be written <strong>in</strong> as current a fashion as possible. Nevertheless, the pr<strong>in</strong>ciplesbeh<strong>in</strong>d this volume will not outdate so rapidly; only those aspects <strong>in</strong>tr<strong>in</strong>sicallydependant on a technological update or a new <strong>in</strong>dustry standard would require acontent revision <strong>in</strong> the future. After go<strong>in</strong>g through the first half of the volume,the reader might get the impression that it focuses primarily on corpora, <strong>in</strong>one way or another. Yet there are two important th<strong>in</strong>gs to note here: First, this is areflection of a current yet matur<strong>in</strong>g research trend and, secondly, this should be agood <strong>in</strong>centive to get to know more about different types of and aspects surround<strong>in</strong>gcorpora (e.g. parallel and comparable corpora, treebanks, exploitation tools,<strong>in</strong>terface and other design po<strong>in</strong>ts, potential <strong>for</strong> teach<strong>in</strong>g future translators <strong>in</strong> lessexpand and update the <strong>in</strong><strong>for</strong>mation presented <strong>in</strong> any of the workshops.
